Cool, Calm, & Collected - Even During the Holidays

Hot Wife & Mom
Bumper to bumper traffic, crowded parking lots, rising gas prices, and Salvation Army bell ringers at every entrance to the supermarket-- that dreaded time of year we all seem to love is slowly creeping near. There's no way to avoid it. Halloween is almost here and then there is Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the all-thrills New Year's Eve. As we make plans to rack up debt by maxing out every piece of plastic in our wallets and visit with those long lost relatives no one in the family wants to see, we need to find ways to keep our stress down. Try these 7 tips:

1. Shop now -- Believe it or not, October is said to be the best time to shop for Christmas gifts. Large stores are already stocking for the holiday season and since there is no immediate demand, prices are not outrageously high. Start collecting the gifts on your list now and by the time December rolls around, you will have more time and money to enjoy Christmas.

2. Shop online -- It's quick and easy. And since gas prices are still pretty high, you can justify paying for shipping. You can find everything you need, don't need, or could ever imagine online. But with identity theft continually on the rise, be careful to use only trusted sites.

3. Fluids, fluids, fluids -- Particularly, water. Contrary to popular belief, there's no better way to relax your mind than to flush away the toxins in our systems than to gulp down the 8-10 recommended glasses a day. And if you're drinking more water during the holidays, you are likely to eat less. Maybe this year you won't feel so guilty about what you've crammed down your throat.

4. Stay focused -- Although Christmas has become a virtual shopping war, there is really more to it than finding that perfect gift for everyone on our lists. Embrace your spirituality and find ways to constantly remind yourself and others of the true meaning of the season. For example, plan a family outing to the church Christmas cantata.

5. Plan ahead -- Why add stress by procrastinating? Map out your holiday trips and events in advance. This is the perfect time to make holiday travel reservations; you'll save time and money by getting things taken care of now. Graciously turn down any of those last minute party and dinner invitations. Reality is that you can't make it to everyone's party. So don't make yourself feel guilty about it.

6. Give, give, give -- Unselfishly give. Help someone or some family who is less fortunate. You'll undoubtedly feel great after shining a little light on another's Christmas.

7. Keep a holiday journal -- Express your feelings on paper. You'll not only let go of your frustrations, but you'll also remember not to seat Aunt Louise and Uncle Tom beside each other at any of next year's dinners.

Whatever your holiday plans, remember to have fun!
