Google's New Bike Map is All the Rave

Google has launched a new addition to their map and direction arsenal. March 10th, 2010 was the launch of the new "Google Bike Maps", and there is much buzz about the new feature across many industries. The map is extensive in directing a cyclist, with over 12000 routes in over 150 cities. The maps are very detailed and can be viewed in a similar way one views the traditional Google Map. However, there are some added features that cater specifically to the cyclist. As with the Ariel view-zooming in & out, and alternate views between satellite and map remain the same, the bicycle map also offers extras like the option to easily change the route. Also, a street level step-by-step view and explanation of the bicycle route is illustrated and proven to be very user friendly. Because a cyclist using the bike maps get a detailed, Google Earth, image of any particular street or roadway within the turn-by-turn directions, it saves them time from wondering and guessing, when turning down new and suspicious roads. maps.google.com/maps It also uses existing bike routes, retrieves live traffic and accident reports, and allows you to quickly change points of reference, all to provide the most convenient and safest way to your destination. Perhaps the most impressive feature from google's bike map is the fact that you can get detailed directions on short cuts and travels via the back-roads. Soon, they'll be walking maps on the market, that will shorten your route even more by taking you through the through the woods or across the river.

For the average cyclist, google's bike map is very convenient and practical. However, there are also others taking advantage of this newly featured wonder.

Local and corporate businesses are using google's bike map features on their websites that cater to geo-targeting. For instance, a local 'mom & pop' shop or a local franchise will post the best bike route to take to get to their store, based on the zip code listed under the IP address of the user's computer. So if you live in Brooklyn, N.Y. and go to a local retailer's website that sells, let's say bicycles, based on the zip code you are in at the time you pull up the website, an instant Google bike map with directions to their store, starting from a main road in your local area will be displayed. It'll take you through regular streets, and even back roadways that may be impossible for cars. This proves vital for those whom may not only be a cyclist, but the average person that is trying to just save on gas, help the environment or is just looking to get some exercise all while getting to their destination in an efficient manner. Here's a sample of the directions I received for a local bike trip to J&S Wings Cafeteria in Greenville, SC. maps.google.com/maps. Because this feature caters to various needs and desires, it proves as a great marketing scheme for small and large businesses alike, and is a wonder to "why hasn't this been in place years ago?".
