Cool Summer Updo Hairstyles for Long Hair

S. Whithers
The summer gets hot. Having long hair can make your neck and back hotter. Updos are a great way to keep hair off your neck while still looking stylish, but sometimes ideas for them can stagnate, so try these unique, fun summer updos to keep this summer cool.

The Side Bun

Step 1. Pull your hair into a high, side ponytail and secure it with an elastic tie.

Step 2. Twist your ponytail until it starts wanting to wrap around its base, and then start doing so while continuing to twist.

Step 3. Tuck the end behind the bun and secure it with several bobby pins.

For a braided bun: braid the ponytail in Step 1. and secure it at the end with a tie. In Step 2., wrap the ponytail around the base without twisting. Finish with Step 3.

The Double Ponytail

Step 1. Separate out the top half of your hair, pull it into a high ponytail, and secure it with a decorative tie or ribbon.

Step 2. Take the remaining hair and form it into a ponytail and inch below the other one. Secure it with a matching or coordinating tie or ribbon.

Step 3. Gather both ponytails together into one big ponytail and secure it with another matching or coordinating tie or ribbon an inch or two from the base.

A variation is to separate your hair vertically and form them into high, closely placed pigtails. Then continue with Step 3. as usual.

The Four Strand Braid

Step 1. Pull your hair up into a high ponytail, high enough that it's off your back. You can tie it up if you want that look, or you can just hold it up with your hand. Separate your hair into two parts, and then separate each part into two again. You now have four strands. Hold two in one hand and two in the other.

Step 2.Take the farthest right strand and bring it over the strand just to the left of it (the middle right strand). Bring the strand just right of the farthest left strand (the middle left strand) over the farthest left strand. Take the new middle left strand and bring it over the middle right strand.

Step 3. Now repeat Step 2. until you are to the end of your hair, then tie it with an elastic tie or ribbon.

The Twisted Pigtails

Step 1. Divide your hair into two parts.

Step 2. Take one half and bring it into a high side ponytail.

Step 3. Divide it into two parts. Separately twist both sections clockwise until halfway down both sections. Now twist the two sections together counter-clockwise until halfway down. Secure with an elastic tie or ribbon.

Step 4. Repeat Steps 2. and 3. on the other half.

This was very very useful, unlike most articles/blogs which just talk about which hairstyles are cool in the latest magazines or whatever but don't actually tell you HOW to do them. I actually did the double ponytail(horizontally) a few days ago :)
