Summits on Global Warming

R. S.
We have been having summits on global warming since the year 1861. It is a known fact that emission of greenhouse gases, fossil fuels, combustion related carbon dioxide concentrates- all these lead to decreasing ozone cover, higher temperatures, melting of glaciers- thus, leading to global warming.

Copenhagen Summit of 2009 is the topic of the day. Covered by various new channels of the day, being talked at office, in the gym and at schools, everyone knows about the most critical issue of the day- global warming and increasing temperatures.

Despite our great knowledge about the current situation of the global warming scenario, we still head out to the nearest grocery store on our car. A morning breakfast at burger king, Mac Donald's, walk able from the home, is reached by car.

Our New Year resolution of losing weight goes for a ride because it is too cold to walk and one would rather drive to the nearest store, postal office or a library. We are all shocked at the higher utility bills, but not once do we think before we emit those greenhouse gases into the environment.

A polar bear, penguin. Whale- all kinds of animals living in the farther edge of the continent have no voice to complain about the combustion filled world of the humans. Else we could find these mammals doing a strike in front of the offices and factories asking us to stop polluting the environment further.

The Himalayan glaciers, source of many rivers of the world, are melting today and the temperatures in the surrounding areas are rising a degree by a quarter century. Ice at the poles is gradually melting due to green house emissions.

At the Kyoto Protocol, held in 1997, all developed nations agreed to cut down emitting greenhouse gases to at least five percent by 2012. However, developing nations have no given targets to do so. Does it mean that when the world gets doomed, it would know and differentiate between a developed, developing and an underdeveloped nation?

Global warming is not meant to affect only developed nations alone. The entire world is subject to the threat. We all wish to benefit from an economic treaty, compete for positions in the Olympics, wish to be the best nation providing health care facilities and together we strife to have peace within the nation.

When we all have such common views, why do we not collectively agree to take an action on global warming too. It was said in the year 2006 that the world's GDP could have a negative effect if nothing was done about curbing global warming. On the other hand, any action taken to curb the global warming issue, would only cost one percent of the world's GDP.

We worry about the wars of terrorism. Our hearts skip a beat thinking about 9/11 or the Afghan issue or a flight hijack. We are worried about increasing heat in the summer and spine shivering winter. We are scared hearing about the tsunami in the coastal areas. However, we ourselves contribute something or the other, once everyday to increase the global warming in the world. Ironically, no one feels guilty about it/

How can we as humans be so insensitive towards such an important issue. It is time that we as citizens take a step further and go green. Eat and wear organic things. Use that solar power for homes and offices. Educate children in schools and homes about the critical aspects of global warming.

Rather than contemplating about which President attends the conference? Which country gets targets to reduce fuel combustion? Who gets blamed at the conference? All these are matters of trivial importance. Once that we question ourselves as to what we did as individuals to control global warming, we would find an answer that who is to be blamed.

It is time we head out and take a stance on the nature of global warming, its current scenario and measures to be taken to curb it from taking a bigger picture in the future.
