Coping with Others Having to Change Your Diapers

Reina Brown
It is humiliating enough that you have to wear diapers to manage your incontinence. It is even worse when someone else has to change your diapers, should something arise that causes you not to be able to do it yourself. Should you find yourself in a situation where you are not able to change your own diapers for whatever reason; or, if you are unable to change your own diapers due to a certain disability, there are some strategies that you can employ that will enable you to cope with such circumstances, so you can keep your dignity intact and feel good about yourself.

One thing that will enable you to better cope with someone having to change your diapers is to make sure you have a supportive network of people that you can talk to or vent to when you are feeling down about yourself. When you have supportive people who will care and listen to you, it always makes matters easier for you. Good friends, understanding family members, incontinence support groups, incontinence message boards, and other online communities for people with various disabilities are good places to find such support. If you choose to make use of an online community for individuals with disabilities, be sure that it is one that understands incontinent individuals, as there are those with disabilities who have no experience with incontinence, as it is not always part of people's disabilities or medical conditions, and those who are unaware may make fun of you. Because you do not want that, do your homework first before joining.

Another coping mechanism that you can employ is to focus on all of your positive attributes. When you think of all of the positive things that you can still do, you will feel better about yourself. You will not feel as down about not being able to change your own diapers, and such circumstances will be easier to cope with.

It is always rough when you lose the ability to do anything for yourself. The important thing to remember, though, is that there will come a time when you can accept who you are and what you can do. Employing the above strategies will make it much easier to cope with not being able to change your own diapers.
