Coppell, Texas Teen Overcomes: Prosthetic Hand Allows Her to Perform with Colorguards

Now This Teen is Inspiring Others to Achieve Their Goals, Too

Natalie Hudson was born without her left hand, but that has not stopped her from pursuing her passion. For the past three years the 16-year-old has performed with Coppell High School's colorguards.

Doctors at Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, where Hudson has been a patient since she was only 3 weeks old, created a special prosthetic "hand" to help with colorguard activities. "It's like a glove that fits over my hand," she said. "It's kind of sticky, like bike handles, so it helps me grab the flag better."

Besides performing as a colorguard, Hudson has played softball for seven years and also has water skied.

It was inspiring for me to watch a video showing this confident young lady from Coppell, Texas sharing her story and her "can-do" performance with patients at Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas. I also found it inspirational to learn how doctors at that hospital took a personal interest in helping their patient achieve a goal by designing a prosthetic hand especially made for Hudson's flag routine.

From an article posted today on dfw.cbslocal.com:

The Coppell teen has learned to live her life without the use of her left hand. But her perceived disability has never limited her ability to take on challenges. "It wasn't about manipulating the flag, it was about believing I could do it," Hudson said. "And after three years, I've learned I really can do anything that I want to try."

There is a real lesson in Natalie Hudson's statement for all of us. I think it could be called, "Believe, then achieve."

The doctors at Scottish Rite Hospital are to be lauded for their efforts in creating a prosthesis. Natalie is a model of inspiration for making it part of her life.

What's that saying, "I cried because I had no boots until I met a man that had no feet."
