For this project, you will need (per canister):
- One square metal canister with removable lid
- Soap and water
- Paper towels
- Medium grit sandpaper
- Soft cloth or tack cloth
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Make It Stone Textured Paint in Mediterranean Reef
- Krylon Premium Metallic Paint in Copper Foil
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Black Matte
- Three inch metal horseshoe (available at craft supply stores or online)
- Gorilla Glue or other strong adhesive
- Craft paper
- Masking tape
- Newspaper or a large drop cloth
Cover your work area with old newspaper sheets or a large drop cloth, either plastic or fabric. Remove the lid from the square metal canister. Wash each item with hot soapy water. Dry the metal well with paper towels, and allow it to air dry until all moisture has dissipated. Gently "scuff" the surface of the metal on both the outside of the canister and the outside of the lid with medium grit sandpaper. Wipe away any dust with a tack cloth or other soft cloth.
Cover any areas of the canister that might come in contact with food (such as the inside) with masking tape and craft paper. Turn the canister upside down and prime it with an even layer of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Repeat for the outside of the lid. Dry for three to four hours. Paint the canister and lid using Krylon Make It Stone Textured Paint in Mediterranean Reef. Let the paint dry overnight before proceeding.
Place the three inch horseshoe flat on the drop cloth or old newspaper. Prime with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Dry completely before painting the horseshoe with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Matte Black. Wait three to four hours before painting with Krylon Premium Metallic Paint in Copper Foil. Wait an hour before adding a second coat of the copper metallic paint. Dry overnight. Use a bit of medium grit sandpaper to chip off random areas of the copper paint, showing exposed black below. (This adds a rustic touch.)
Add a generous amount of Gorilla Glue or other strong adhesive to the back of the horseshoe. Let the glue dry fully (usually within twenty-four hours) before hand washing and enjoying your new creation.
