Copperas Cove Schools on Lockdown Due to Fort Hood Shooting

Copperas Cove, Texas -- The mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, today caused area schools to be on lock-down, Copperas Cove ISD included. The shooting happened between 1:30 and 2 p.m. on the Fort Hood Army base, minutes from Copperas Cove where many military families live and military children attend school.

Schools will release at the regular time with buses departing delayed in 15-minute increments. Parents may pick their children up at any time. All efforts are being made to ensure all children get home safely. Emergency personnel were also sent to schools on base to help with the situation.

Parents of Copperas Cove ISD students are required to pick up their students from the school. No unauthorized personnel is allowed inside the school and no students were released on their own or to anyone other than a parent or authorized adult.

If your student normally walks home, they will not be allowed to leave the school building until a parent comes to pick them up. Special arrangements are being made at all schools to try to keep the process as smooth as possible.

The shooting took place on Fort Hood at the sports dome, also known as the readiness center, during a graduation ceremony for night school students.

The Pentagon initially reported 7 dead and 20 injured from the shooting at Fort Hood Thursday afternoon. One suspect is in custody and at least one more is still on the loose. Recent Schools in Killeen, Temple and other surrounding areas were also put on lockdown.

    Scary stuff.

Since Ft Hood was on lockdown, some of those poor kids had to stay at school until 8pm or later. But school was back on schedule this morning. My kids were a little stressed by it all but so far, no one we know personally was injured. It has definitely affected the entire community, of course.
