These are some actions that involved with copying you may use:
1. Copying emails from Outlook:
Most of the Windows users use Microsoft Outlook (in Microsoft Office) or Outlook Express (default in Windows) as their email client. Important emails can be saved by searching C:\Documents and Settings\\\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook for Microsoft Outlook and C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express for Outlook Express.
To view your email files, you have to unmark hidden files by going to Tools > Folder Options. Then, choose View Tab and mark "Show hidden files and folders". You should copy all the files that have .PST and .DBX extensions. To recover the email, simply write the copied files over the folder.
Here are some file types in Outlook:
*.PST: Personal Folder- these are the most important files of Outlook. They contain the information about Outlook like Calendar, Inbox, Tasks, Sent Items, Outbox, Deleted Items and the folders that user created. I recommend you close Outlook before copying this file type.
*.OST: Offline Storage
*.PAB: Personal Address Book
*.RWZ: Rules
*.NICK: Nickname File
*.NK2: Auto Complete Files
*.DAT: Toolbar and Menu
*.FAV: Favorites for Outlook Bar
*.HTM, *.RTF, *.TXT: Auto Signature
*.OFT: Template Files
2. Copying Favorites:
To copy favorite website, search the link C:\ Documents and Settings\\Favorites and copy all the files. In another computer, open Internet explorer and click File > Import and Export. A wizard will appear to help you to copy favorites from the copied files.
3. Copying Registry:
Registry is very important in Windows. Therefore, you must be careful when changing, deleting or adding registry. One small error in registry may affect the whole system.
In Windows XP, users cannot copy registry in working system. All the registry files are locked and users will not be able to find them. One way to copy register files is to use System Restore in Windows. Besides, you can use software. However, I recommend you this way. Go to Start > Run. Type in "regedit". Export register files partially while Windows XP is still working.
If errors occur, you can use the exported registry files to back up one part of your registry or your whole registry system. Registry files normally have extension REG. Simply double click the file to re-registry.
4. Copying by using software:
There are hundreds of softwares you can use to copy information in Windows. However, if you have the Windows CD, you can use software right in Windows. Insert your Windows CD and go to Valueadd\msft\tbackup. In this folder, run file ntbackup.msi.
After installing, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup. A wizard will appear. Choose "Backup files and folders" and click "Next". In the second wizard, there are many options. You can choose to copy your Documents and Settings, all of the users in Windows or all information in your computers. Click "Next". The next wizard will ask you where to save the copied files. After locating the folder, click "Next". The program will begin to copy your information.
You should copy the information into CD or DVD. You can also refer Mirosoft Easy Backup here.
