Coraline 3D: Review

Charming and Fun but Creepy

3D movies have always been a cheap gimmick that really never delivered, but with the leaps and bounds that technology has made I had to give Real D (the new 3 D) a chance. I noticed the difference before even being inside the theater when I bought my ticket and was expecting one of those old fashion paper made 3D glasses with the one blue lens and one red lens but instead they handed me what seemed to be a pair of cheap plastic sun glasses. I put them on immediately and received strong looks from people as I passed them. I happened to pass a mirror and noticed the lenses weren't as dark as I thought they would appear on my face but instead were quite clear, well clear wouldn't be the word because they had a strange effect going on sort of like a hologram that made my eyes look pretty trippy. Going in the theater all the previews and advertisements were in 3D which made the usually boring previews an experience instead of something you're just watching to pass the time.

A short time later the movie started and right from the opening credits the audience was wowed at the construction of a small doll being stuffed and sewn together. At one point the needle appeared to come right off the screen right at you. Even when there was nothing moving towards you there were still 3D effects going on where it looked like you are watching everything in layers. The movie draws you in with both subtle and aggressive 3D effects but as it goes on you start to notice the absence of the subtle 3D. This will last until the next spectacular display of activities makes its presence known. You can pretty much feel the 3D coming.

The plot of the movie is entertaining and fun. I started the movie thinking that my niece and nephew needed to see this movie but as the story line progressed things got a little too creepy. I actually heard the little girl a couple seats down say" I'm never going to see this movie again", which is a shame because other than that small portion of the move it's really perfect for children. I'd say this movie would be great for kids 8 or older but the really little ones may be better off waiting a couple of years to fully enjoy it.

Overall it was the most memorable experience I've ever had at the movies.

*Side note*

A friend of mine has a problem with one of her eyes that doesn't allow her to see the old fashion 3D, but she had no problem experiencing the new "Real D".

I can't write this in the third person... I just can't. To do so would make me feel like a douche big enough to accommodate Madonna. My articles are a change of pace from what you can expect anywhere else. M...  View profile
