Core Beliefs in One-Liners

It Does Not Always Take a Lot of Words to Express a Big Thought

David A. Reinstein, LCSW
Those of us who work with words tend, sometimes, to overvalue them or to mistakenly equate the volume of them with their ability to convey meaning and depth. Just as the deceptively simple 17 syllable Haiku demonstrates in poetry, this is not necessarily true in matters of religious belief or philosophy either.

While there are hundreds of thousands of instructional and deeply reflective one-liners, I believe that the following five have some considerable special relevance to many people.

For your consideration:

"If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change."
In the microcosm, the largest thigs can be seen and known.
Buddha

"Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad."
Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one.
The essence of Monotheism.
Deuteronomy 6:4

"Dominus vobiscum, Et cum spiritu tuo."
The Lord be with You, And with thy spirit .
The classic greeting and chant in the Latin Catholic Mass with roots, surprisingly, in the Old Testament.
Ruth 2:4 and 2 Chronicles 15:2

Cogito ergo sum. (Je pense donc je suis.)
I think, therefore I am.
The sentience of humankind defining our very existence.
René Descartes

"Mentsch tracht, Gott lacht."
Men plan, God laughs
Yiddish proverb oft repeated by my grandmother.

No doubt, each reader will have ones of their own worth adding. Please feel free to add them in the comment section for the benefit of everyone else who reads this.

I like what Orciolum said, and Lois. Doesn't take a lot of words to make us think sometimes.
