Core Rhythms: Work Out DVD Review

Dance Your Way to Disappointment

AnthroKnit
We've all seen them, the flashy, ultra-sexy commercials for the dance-workout Core Rhythms. This fast paced routine promises to not only teach you professional-looking dance moves but to slim you down and make you look like you've been dancing your entire life. Sound amazing and almost too hard to believe? This writer was lucky enough to try it, had being given to me as a gift. My rating? Two thumbs down, and thats from a seasoned workout routine attempter.
To begin, Core Rhythms makes the poor decision in assuming we are all visual learners. The two women from the DVDs, Julia Powers and Jaana Kunitz, are quite obviously professional dancers and party-girls. They waste no time in blasting you with so many moves that you spend more time staring in disbelief at the TV than burning calories. And this writer has been through rough workout routines: I also did P90X for weeks. The ladies give you one example of the dance move in medium speed, one in fast speed, and then then break down to "party-time" where they just have a ball entertaining themselves. Unless you are already a dancer and don't need really Core Rhythms for weight loss purposes, this is not effective. Despite this, I attempted during the entire first DVD to stay with them to some degree, which was my mistake. If you are someone who needs to drop a few pounds, feeling your butt and thighs flapping away to these emphatic movements is not an esteem-boosting experience.

Their second highly disappointing feature is: while not explaining the basics of the dance moves, i.e. how to shift your weight, what your feet are doing, what the correct move should feel like, they also fail to tell you how to not injure yourself in the process of attempting anything. The movements are high-impact and jarring, I ended up with pain (not muscle soreness which would indicate an effective workout) in my lower back and knees. The DVD pack does come with a "lesson" on the moves, however it is almost embarrassing to watch. The two ladies (lovely as they are) seem to have far more chemistry with each other than the camera, and both have Russian accents so thick it is nearly impossible to decipher what they are even saying, much less learn from them.

Lastly, Core Rhythms seems to have a serious problem with customer service. According to Infomercialscams.com, 72 different people complain of being charged too many times for the product, unable to return it for a refund, and charged for additional services and products. Buyer beware, Core Rhythms is probably not for you if you want a serious workout routine.
