Corey Haim's Death Investigation Leads to Illegal Prescription Drug Ring

Corey Haim Prescription Drugs Were Illegally Obtained

Corey Haim's death may involve a crime and one that he may be part of. The Attorney General's Office is conducting an investigation into finding "unauthorized" prescriptions in his name. Investigators now believe that Haim may have been involved in an "illegal and massive prescription-drug ring".

In an Interview with People Magazine, AG spokesperson, Christine Gasparac stated that, "We know there was a prescription pad stolen and there was a prescription written for him using that pad, so it was fraudulent and we know it was filled."

I has been confirmed by the L.A. Coroner that four prescription pill bottles in Haim's name were recovered from the scene of his mother's apartment the day he died. But it's unknown at this time if any of those medications were obtained through the drug ring, or whether Haim even knew about the scam and just brought the prescriptions from someone else.

Although police reported an overdose as the cause of death, just hours after Corey Haim died, toxicology tests will have the final say if this is the case.

Haim's name came up in the course of a major investigation into an "illegal and massive prescription-drug ring," according to Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr.

How the ring works is by ordering prescription pads from the businesses that make them using stolen doctor identities, the AG's office said in a statement Friday. Once they have gotten the pads, they are either sold on the street to addicts or are given to people to go into the pharmacies and get the drugs filled. The people who go into the pharmacies are paid and the drugs are sold on the illegal market.

The doctor whose name is on the prescription pad is usually unaware that his name is on any of these prescriptions.

Corey Haim, 38, died last week after complaining of having a hard time breathing. His autopsy said he had fluid in his lungs, an enlarged heart and pulmonary congestion. These, although serious, are not thought to be the sole cause of Haim's death.

The drugs found at Corey's mother's apartment where he was staying at the time of his death are thought to have contributed to his death. The drugs found were Vicodin, Valium, and a Muscle Relaxer which are all drugs that can slow down the repertory system, which would explain his trouble breathing. The toxicology test will shed light on what exactly killed Corey Haim. It is not due back for a few weeks.
