I recommend using a cylinder lamp or cube lamp base for this project if at all possible. If you do not have a cylinder or cube lamp base, then build a simple box from plywood. Slip it over your lamp base and use that. No one will ever know what is underneath.
To Make a Cork Lamp Base You Will Need:
Cork Sheeting
Spray Adhesive
Tacks
Scissors
Ruler
To get started you want to choose your lamp. Look for a lamp with a smooth surface. The main body of the lamp needs to be a cylinder or a squares, something that is easy to wrap and will not require cutting the cork sheet into small pieces.
Cork sheeting will chip and tear easy if you try to cut it into super small pieces.
Now, take your sheet of news paper. Use this to form a template of the base of the lamp. Simply wrap the lamp base and trace the shape now cut out the paper to form your template.
Once the template is cut out then you can roll out your sheet of cork on the table. Trace out the pattern using your template.
Now, the rest of this cork lamp base project needs to be finished outside. You want to lay your cut out cork board on the ground or a newspaper lined table. Gently spray a thin coat of spray adhesive, something like Super 77, on the sheet.
You can read the instruction on the product you buy to make sure your work the glue properly.
Once the adhesive is ready you can simply wrap you lamp base. Press into place on the lamp making sure to not create air bubbles.
Now, to finish this off you have a few options. My favorite is to use some black gross grain ribbon that is 1 inch wide. Cut a couple piece and glue the around the top and bottom of the cork board on the lamp. The black really grounds the cork board and looks really rich.
Of course you can use any color you wish on the lamp. Try coordinating this with your home office or whatever room it will be in. The push pins or tacks you use can also be coordinated to the room as well for a fun pulled together look.
