Corner Bakery's DC Chicken Salad on Steakhouse Rye Review

The Pen
The Corner Bakery is one of my favorite restaurants to go to when I need to buy a quick & inexpensive lunch or dinner that's more satisfying than fast food. I usually only try a few of my favorite items on the menu, but while I was there a few days ago I was in the mood for something different.

When I looked on the menu and saw the D.C. Chicken Salad on Steakhouse Rye I decided to order it. I love chicken salad and I saw that Corner Bakery's contained currants which I thought would add a bit of sweet flavor to the chicken.

The Corner Bakery D.C. Chicken Salad on Steakhouse Rye is made with roasted chicken, crisp green apples, currants, red onions, celery, mayonnaise, and toasted almonds. The sandwich also includes lettuce and tomatoes.

This Corner Bakery Sandwich has 620 calories, 82g of carbohydrates, 27g of protein, and 21g of fat. There are 4g of fiber in each sandwich and 1700mg of sodium.

When I got the D.C. Chicken Salad sandwich I saw that the steakhouse rye bread was a really dark brown, the chicken salad looked chunky and filling and I thought it would taste delicious.

Normally I don't care for rye bread but I found the Corner Bakery's Steakhouse Rye to be quite tasty, it had flavor but it wasn't as bitter as other rye breads I've tried.

As far as the D.C. Chicken Salad I wasn't as pleased with it.

I thought that the chicken was roasted well, it was tender and juicy. And of course the celery and red onions complimented the chicken and gave it a hearty flavor. The green apples added a crisp texture and sour juiciness, while the occasional currant added some sweet juicy flavor. And the almonds topped it off and added a nutty flavor.

I loved all of the ingredients in the Corner Bakery D.C. Chicken Salad except for the mayonnaise that was supposed to blend all of the flavors together. It was just way too sweet and it basically ruined the whole sandwich for me.

I like chicken salads that are blended with mayo that's either mildly sweet or not sweet at all. I'd rather have the fruits or nuts provide a natural sweetness to the salad, and I just felt that the sweetness of the mayonnaise completely overwhelmed the taste of the other ingredients, and when I ate the currants the sweetness just became overkill for me.

In the End...

I won't be buying the Corner Bakery's Chicken Salad Sandwich on Steakhouse Rye again. I didn't think the sandwich was filling enough, and none of the ingredients, not even the bread or the chicken could compete with the sweetness of the mayonnaise blend.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars, but if you like your chicken salads on the sweet side, then perhaps you'd enjoy this Corner Bakery sandwich.
