Corporate Bailout - $700 Billion

PennyB
There's no doubt that there will be a lot of articles written today, and in days to come, on the US government's $700 billion bailout to assist the flailing financial institutions..... those mainly being Lehman Brothers, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae and AIG. This, all in an attempt to prevent a possible and potentially damaging recession.

Far be it for the "people" to stand in the way of stopping a recession.

Here are some hard facts as to why the average American might be finding this $700 billion proposal very hard to grasp:

* Where is the government when "they", the people, are about to face foreclosure on their mortgages, due to the skyrocketing cost of owning a home? Where is THEIR bailout plan? Oh yes, I think it's called claiming "bankruptcy"!

* Where is the government when the people ask for relief in paying high health insurance premiums or worse, lose everything they have worked so hard to acquire all because of an illness in the family?

* Why is the government so quick in assisting these multi-billion dollar companies and so slow when it comes to working out a plan for the average worker, family household, tax payer, to ease THEIR financial distress?

* Why is it that the government can find the money ($700 BILLION) so quickly to help these financial institutions, when each year they consistently raise taxes on the average American's earnings, making it harder and harder for them to make ends meet, while in the same breath, had been giving corporations, such as these, tax breaks? Oh yes, and taxes will be raised again to compensate for this $700 billion!

* Why is it that the US government can fork over $700 billion for financial institutions who lived high on the hog all these years, giving their CEO's and company presidents million dollar bonuses, yet they can't use that money to provide a better health care service to the average citizen?

* Why does the government all of a sudden have $700 billion to spare, when schools have to close programs and disband extra curricular activities because there is no money in the education coffers?

* Why is that these big companies, who mismanaged their money, can get help, but soldiers who come home from the war can't get proper, free health care when they suffer from PTSD, or other war-related conditions, after fighting for their country no less?

* Why is it that the government all rallies around in emergency meetings, jumping to the aid of companies who duped the public and are now paying the piper, yet there are no emergency meetings to change laws to protect the innocent?

* Why is it that there is $700 billion for free help to these corporations, yet there is no money for free health care?

Now, if the "people" all ran their household income as these big institutions did, do you think the government would care when it all goes belly up? No, they'd most likely tax the people even more. However, if you can't pay your taxes, then at least you do get free room and board.

Yes, it's really hard for the average tax paying American to understand why THIS bailout package will help the economy when they are finding it harder each month to pay the mortgage/rent, buy groceries for their families and keep up with medical insurance or decent health care... and God forbid anyone in their family becomes ill !

I admit, I don't quite understand the workings of "big business" and the reason for "corporate bailouts", but I do understand what it is to be an average income earner and tax payer.

Well, maybe there's a silver lining in all this mess. Maybe the timing couldn't have been better if it were planned. Maybe, being that this is an election year, and this happening just weeks away from election day, the parties vying for the American public's vote, will FINALLY have to deal with the REAL issues at hand instead of bantering back and forth about "race", Palin's pregnant, unwed daughter and various other nonessential matters! Maybe now they will actually have to listen to the American people.

Whomever happens to get elected in November, will have to actually do some work for the fist while in office!

Canada, keep you eye on what happens..... you might be next. There are some big wigs getting preferential treatment here too! What ever happens in the US, usually trickles up here eventually.

I am having a hard time choking this down. I don't know enough yet to make a good decision about it but I don't understand why there is no money for the people who pay the taxes but there is endless money for corporations who have gotten out of paying their share.

I think they should divide that $700 billion amongst the US citizens and we would all be able to pay off OUR debts and keep our houses and spend money on groceries and gas and "all things retail" ... then the economy would swing back around. THAT would be a a win-win to me!

This is right up my alley! This is exactly what I am talking about. These large companies were not able to manage their own money and accounts so our solution is to give them MORE MONEY?!? Is DC insane. This is like giving a person money after they gambled it away in Las Vegas. This is like lending an addict more money, what assurance is there that they will do anything good with it.

The government wants to help them out because they want interest on that money over a long period of time. So the 700 billion will turn out to be one trillion dollars. Its all about ROI (return on investment). They never want to just hand out money its all about what is in it for BIG BROTHER.

I am starting to get really tired of how things are run in this country. We are smart enough know not to be fooled anymore, but what can we do about it really, I really want to know.
