Corporate Culture Choices

Where You Decide to Exchange Time for Money

Sharon Tulley
When you are looking for a job in this economic system of today, you still have choices in where you will invest your time as a worker although it may seem that the element of choice is gone. Everyone decides where they are willing to exchange their precious commodity of time spent on earth and what they will devote their life to. Give you an example, you can decide to be poor and not have the ability to pay your bills by not working. I know that it doesn't always seem like a choice because of hard economic times, but even in the choice to have a place to live and the quality of your life, you do have an element of choice. I'm not saying that the choices are easy by any means. You may have to do a kind of job or way of living that doesn't appeal to you. But in every area of your life, there is some decision to be made even if it's just the choice to live or die.

I know that this is a difficult time that the economy is experiencing. I know that I'm blessed in my own life and in many ways, my life is paradise compared to the difficulties that many people struggle with just to live right now. But in writing this article it is my goal to show a side of hope and encouragement to whoever reads this article. Because when we have no hope at all, no one can help us, not even a Divine Creator or God however you may believe in One. We must be willing to see a light in the darkest times or keep a hope alive that if we take a step into the darkness there will be the faintest glimmer of hope to light our path.

I did an assignment for my Intro to Business class this week analyzing three different corporate cultures of three of the top 100 companies from 2008. I wanted to share my answers in an article with the Associated Content readers to show that there are companies that have heart. The companies I wrote about in my assignment all share one thing in common, a value for the worker on a human being level. Quicken Loans I found appeals to even promoting wholesome leisure activities. Nike takes action in rescuing lost hikers and skiers. And EBay reaches out to the person on a whole well being level. My answers to my assignment are as follows:

Quicken Loans

Quicken Loans was rated second in the top 100 companies to work for in 2008. One of its unusual perks incentives is that, at least for the Michigan branches, offers the use of company bus transportation to sports games for the Cavaliers. Or at least it was available at one time. This suggests to me an encouragement to embrace team player and family type activities as part of their incentive to their workers. It shows to me also that there is a value for wholesome family activities that they encourage their workers to participate in and see people as a whole, not just as a worker, but in their everyday leisure activities as well.

Nike

Nike ranked 82 shows its heart and concern for the community and people as a whole. It promotes volunteerism in a rescue effort for lost hikers at the Portland Mountain Rescue. This concern for humanity and the people equation of setting lost hikers and skiers back on the right path shows a great compassion for human life. Their willingness to drop their desk work to reach out to people in trouble says quite a bit in actions that words fail to convey. Words are cheap as they say. This shows to me that when Nike's slogan is "just do it" they really do believe in taking the steps to jump into action.

EBay

EBay is ranked 68 of the top 100 companies but what sets this unique company apart? People log on to EBay daily in contest for the "prizes" of what they can bid at the best price for a bargain in an auction, but do people know how EBay cares for the welfare of the employees from the inside out? From my research in "drilling" as you suggested I found that EBay cares for the overall health as well as spirituality however the person may believe by providing help with nutrition and offering prayer or meditation rooms. This says a lot to me about how they care for the person as a whole and not just an employee number. It tells me also that they are wise to treat the causes of stress before they become symptoms of greater health risk and know the value of having a healthy, happy employee leads to a productive employee and therefore, a better company environment as a whole.
