Hands on training
Some employees have to actually perform the duties before they can learn and before they can actually comprehend what they need to do on a job. If employees are being trained to work in a call center some will not feel comfortable until they actually get on the phone and start receiving phone calls.
Video
Other employees learn by watching videos. They like to see a demonstration of the work performed on a screen.
Reading
Of course you have employees that would prefer to read the material at their own pace. This seems to be the only way they can grasp the main concepts. They have the freedom of reading the material over and over again until it sticks and they are able to grasp the ideas.
Lectures
Another method of training is lecturing. Some employees love to take notes because they are good at it. This method becomes effective because they are writing the material down and this allows the information to become submerged within their subconscious mind.
Power point presentations
Another group likes to see power point presentations. Most presentations have an orderly flow and they are able to grasp the information by following along with the presentation slides.
If an organization is going to train employees to perform their needed job duties it is best to utilize all at least more than one method of training because everyone does not learn the same way. When you use two or more techniques you make sure that everyone is able to make efficient use of the material presented. An organization does not normally know right away which employee likes which method the best. When the training is over companies that want to improve their methods will allow employees to fill out surveys. These surveys ask employees to rate the quality of the training. Some of the questions asked are which areas of the training were the least effective? Which areas of the training were the most effective?
If you had to make changes to the program what would they be? Did the material presented effectively prepare you to perform the duties of this job?
The feedback allows employers to make the necessary adjustments to the program. If they keep seeing a common complaint such as we would like to see more involvement on behalf of the employees or we would like to do more role playing, more than likely they will incorporate more of those items into the training programs for future employees. Companies may even take it upon themselves to administer updated training programs after employees have been on board for 6 to 12 months utilizing some of the changes and amendments.
