Corvette: Driving on the Tail of the Dragon on the East Coast

DeeDee
As Corvette enthusiasts, my husband and I, along with our close friends and many members of our Corvette Club, have been to Bowling Green, KY, several times. This is the homeland of the Corvette. It's where our precious little vehicles are conceived in the Bowling Green Assembly Plant, a place where they allow public tours. Just across the street is the National Corvette Museum where many events draw Corvette lovers from across the country and sometimes, from across the world.

On our last trip there we had a great time, but we had an even better time on the way home. To extend the excitement of our trip, the three Corvettes that usually travel together, me and my husband in our Magnetic Red Corvette, our friends Bob and Denise in their Black Corvette, and our friend Ray in his Nassau Blue Corvette, decided to head back home which is north of Kentucky, via the way of the Tail of the Dragon.

So what is that you ask? It's a wild and crazy road that has 318 turns in 11 miles which stretches from North Carolina into Tennessee. Motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts alike come from all over the world just to drive on this road. It was quite an experience.

The deal was, the three guys would drive north on the road to experience it and then the ladies would have their turn going south back down it a second time and then we'd either head home another way, or do it north a third time and then continue on. Well, after the first trip up, we decided that we really didn't have to do it again! It was so curvy we felt a little nauseous! It was great fun though! We took some corners at 40 m.p.h. which probably doesn't sound like much, but when you consider that the curves where a complete U-Turn, that was pretty fast! I would never try that in my Pontiac Sunfire!

At times I felt like we were going to crash right into the stone wall of the base of the mountain and just that fast we swerved left and were on our way down the next stretch of road. It twisted and turned, often times not even allowing us a sneak peak at what was to come. We went up and we went down. We went through wooded areas and then were overlooking bodies of water from the top of the mountain. It was so pretty. A few times I saw something of interest, but in a flash it was gone, or should I say, we were gone. We had our walkie talkies with us to communicate amongst the three vehicles, but to be honest, the radios were pretty quiet. We were too busy holding on!

Along the way we were photographed by KillBoy and photography business that started just for the purpose of taking photos of motorists on this road. How very smart. They sit in two different locations and take pictures of you head on when you round a corner. Later you can visit their website for photos of yourself and then you can place an order and have whatever you want made - wall prints, small photos, mouse pads, etc. Of course we fell for it and bought some.

For those interested in visiting this road, it is really beautiful there in the middle of the mountains. And there are plenty of small hotels and motels to stay at our cabins to rent. And I believe there are places to camp if you like. If you dare to stop, there are plenty of scenic babbling streams and other beautiful things to see - I think? We were going by so fast!

Deal's Gap is the most exciting ride of your life, so my boyfriend (crotch rocket bike enthusiast and rider) tells me. We have the dragon stickers on our cars. He is taking me this summer, and I can't wait for the ride of my life. It is a very scary ride if you are unexperienced on bikes though. You would be amazed at the accidents on this stretch. However, when you are an enthusiast to a high performance vehicle, whether automobile or bike, you can't help but to seek the adrenaline rush!

I love these cars! There's a Corvette club that takes on the Texas Hill Country. I see them out all the time on nice weekends. Great read!
