Cost Associated with Buying a Motorcycle

Interested in buying a motorcycle? If so you probably want to figure out what you are going to actually need before doing so. A big chunk of what the hobby is going to cost you depends on what exactly you want so the prices can fluctuate. The example I will be using is for a Kawasaki KLX 250S.

1. The bike. This is the most important and the most expensive item. The ranges vary widely depending the engine size, features, model, and make. For my example the bike would cost around $6,000 for a brand new model or $4,500 for a used model.

2. Then you need to think about getting insurance for your motorcycle. In my case it is around $650 a year for the Kawasaki. Insurance rises with the size of the engine. For example the same Kawasaki but with a 650 cc engine has insurance of $1,500 for me for a year. Since it always gets worse gas mileage, I went with the 250 cc model. If you get a motorcycle you will also have to get life insurance. From State Farm it is only $15 a month for me. This is cheap in my mind, and provides $100,000 of coverage.

3. You also need to register your bike. In Illinois it is $65 for a title and $38 to register it and get your license plate.

4. The second most important thing you will want to buy is a helmet. These can be expensive, but are well worth the money. I would say you want to spend in the $200-300 range to get a helmet that is safe and provides some comfort. It you want a lighter and more comfortable helmet you are going to have to spend more. Just remember that it is a onetime investment, and is an investment in your health in case of a crash. Be sure to get a helmet that is D.O.T. certified. (U.S. Department of Transportation) This means that it has been tested and approved by the government, and should protect you. The best defense though is to drive defensively and to be a safe driver in order to avoid a crash. You also need to decide how much face coverage you want. This will depend on the type of riding you will be doing, and the temperatures that you will be riding in.
