Costa Rican International Sequeira Out of Soccer?

Douglas Sequeira Will Not Play for Real Salt Lake Next Season

After two years in Major League Soccer, Douglas Sequeira finds himself out of work. The 29 year old defensive midfielder was a mainstay at Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica, a regular favorite to win the CONCACAF Champions Cup, and continues to play with the Costa Rican National Team.

When Sequeira came to the MLS in 2005, he signed with expansion side Chivas USA in Los Angeles. Sequeira was one of the few bright spots for the team, which suffered through an agonizing season with only four wins.

With a struggling defense, Sequeira was bumped out of a defensive midfield position and put on Chivas' back line. Although he experienced little succes in the back, the Costa Rican managed to snag two goals and one assist for a team that only scored 31 times during the entire season.

At the end of the 2005 season, Sequeira was traded to Real Salt Lake in exchange for Brian Dunseth. Sequeira continued to play as a back. Unfortunately for Salt Lake, their two veteran centeral defenders left for World Cup 2006.

With both Sequeira and Eddie Pope on duty with their respective national teams, Salt Lake dropped three of their five games in June. Sequeira played in two of Costa Rica's three matches, which all ended in losses for the Central Americans.

Sequeira only managed to see the field 18 times last season and snuck in only one goal. Despite his veteran experience and solid standing with the Costa Rican National Team, his performance at Salt Lake was met with disproval from Coach Ellinger.

Sequeira is currently off the Salt Lake roster and free for the taking. Although it remains to be seen if Sequeira will make another appearance in the MLS, it is almost a given that he will take to the pitch again, perhaps returning to Saprissa.
