Costume Roleplay: What is Cosplay?

Garrett H.
There are many ways that people support their favorite entertainment releases, be it movies, shows, comics, books, games, etc. One way that seems to be reserved for the most fervent and elite of fans is called cosplay (costume role-play). A fan dresses up in gear supporting their platform or as a specific character, usually joining a large group. Most cosplayers wait for big conventions of comics and films before they don their robes and props.

However, cosplay can be a very fun way to kill a boring afternoon, especially with a group of friends. It also warrants benefits, be it entertained onlookers or accepting free rewards. Even if you have never supported your favorite entertainment releases in this fashion, it is a great time to share with friends. You don't have to be a fervent fan to support your franchise and to attempt cosplay. If you decide to, heed some of these tips to have the most fun you can.

1. You don't have to lose your dignity and self-respect
The first thing to come to terms with is to not be embarrassed. A lone cosplayer has every right to be, but if you go in a pair or group to the release party, just relax. People respond well to groups of people dressing in the same fashion, especially if you put on a show. What is the point of dressing up without turning some curious heads? Other fans will respond positively to you and your group, too. Know that you are in an atmosphere of nothing but fans themselves; you've just decided to support it on another level, and have done so with a group you already feel safe around. Live it up!

2. Prepare for benefits
If your group is punctual to the event and each member has put noticeable effort into their costume, be prepared for numerous benefits. Many movie theatres encourage large groups of fans to support hotly anticipated films for the obvious reason of marketing and hype. If your group puts on a show and entertains those in line for the film, you will potentially get in for free. It has happened to me and many other people I know who attempted it so give it a shot. Many stores and theatres also expect large fan turnouts, and often have activities and contests prepared. If that's the case participate to your hearts content. Large groups are also usually asked to pose for photos and never cease to make people smile. Reap the rewards of your effort, and remember that you're cosplaying because you love the entertainment you're supporting. Don't let crowds pressure you into doing things, or even allow the night in question to blow your head to a condescending size. Keep class and respect, and have fun with the benefits.

3. You will have stories and memories to share
True, many of your tales could be weird; just remember that there are always more dogmatic and enthusiastic fans than you and your group, people who live for it and continually embarrass themselves. If the memories of other fans don't stick with you, the time you spend with your friends will. The benefits you garner, the heads you turn, and the worthwhile feeling of taking time making your costume will stay with you and encourage you to try cosplay again.

Cosplay is simple enjoyment. You do not have to be a crazy fanatic to try it out - I sure wasn't. Make sure to go in pairs or better yet large groups. Be civilized and respectable, reap your benefits, and keep yourself laughing with the memories of the night. Give cosplay a chance. If anything it eases boredom and makes the entertainment you supported more entertaining and personal to you and your friends.
