Cottons and Their Uses

There are so many fabrics available nowadays, and it can get very confusing if you don't know which fabrics to use for which garments.

Jersey cotton.

This is fine knit fabric that stretches and drapes well. It is crease resistant and is normally used for sportswear and T-shirts.

Madras cotton.

This is a lightweight fabric that creases easily and is normally used for making casual clothes.

Chambray.

This is a plain weave fabric that is used for making blouses, skirts, children's clothes and tablecloths.

Seersucker.

This is a lightweight fabric, used for shirts suits and children's clothes.

Muslin.

Often used as a lining in tailored clothes.

Broderie Anglaise.

Generally used for dresses and nightwear.

Voile.

Used for children's clothes, blouses, dresses and blinds.

Damask.

Normally used for jackets and waistcoats.

Denim.

Used for casual clothes. This is a heavyweight fabric that washes easily.

Corduroy.

A heavyweight fabric, used for casual clothes, shirts and children's clothes.

Brushed cotton.

Used for casual clothes and children's clothes

Cotton velvet.

A woven fabric that is used for evening wear an soft furnishings.

Moleskin.A medium weight fabric used for casual clothes and children's clothes.
