Cottonwood Place

Sarah Coiner
Ian Hunter was once known as one of the leading surgeons in New York. But after a malpractice suit, he finds himself out of work and addicted to the bottle. However, when he comes across a brochure for a bed and breakfast in Nevada, Ian knows that he has to get to that place. The brochure reads, "Where do you go when you have nowhere else to go?", fitting Ian's life perfectly. Never mind that seeing the brochure convinces him that the owner is his future wife. Now if only he can convince her of that. But Megan McCloud learns early on of Ian's drinking problems, and will not allow herself to go back to that lifestyle, no matter how attracted she finds herself to the doctor.

Running the family's inn, with the help of her canine and feline children, Megan finds great solace in helping her guests beyond their stay at her inn. Megan and her two pets work behind the scenes to try to help the guests with marriage problems and other complications. However, when it comes to her own problems, Megan is hesitant to even face them herself. Meeting the good doctor begins to change that as she begins to trust Ian. As her large family begins meeting Ian, everyone knows that the two belong together. However, Megan is not about to entrust her life and heart to an alcoholic. She has promised herself never to go through that again. Will her family's dreams come true, or will Megan let an out of her life.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved the two main characters. Both were asking hard questions of the Lord, but came to terms with their problems by the book's end. I confess that some of the Indian practices confused me. Some of the rituals seemed like Life Age rituals, and that made me somewhat uncomfortable. I understood better as I read on. Megan's pets seemed to always be helping somehow, including trying their hands, er, paws, at matchmaking which was fun to watch. Overall, I enjoyed Sandy Wickersham-McWhorter's book, and think that you will as well.
