Cough Remedies for Pregnant Women

For most people when a cough develops, they usually reach for an over the counter medication in order to cure or suppress it. What though do you reach for if you happen to be pregnant? You do not want to take anything that will harm yourself or that child. Certain ingredients in over the counter medications for coughs can hurt the baby. Here are some great things you can do at home (and they're simple too!) to cure that cough that won't seem to go away.

A woman who is pregnant should not take any over the counter medications unless it is prescribed by a doctor. The reason for this is that there could be a side effect that involves the baby that you are carrying. Those ingredients in the medication could also affect you as well so before consuming anything it is best to set up an appointment with a doctor. It is probably best though in this circumstance that you take something naturally so you know that you are not harming yourself as well as the baby.

There is a great natural remedy for a cough that is quite simple to prepare. Get a glass and fill it with 8 ounces of orange juice (freshly squeezed or otherwise). You can also add lemon to it if you prefer. Drink this twice to three times a day. You will notice slowly that your cough is diminishing and eventually it will be gone. You should also drink a large amounts of water (more so than what you would regularly drink) and this is to get rid of the phlegm.

Honey is really great to battle against that phlegm. You can add it to anything with vitamin C in it and it works quite well. Since this is a natural remedy, it will not hurt you or the baby that you are carrying.

It is also important that you get an adequate amount of rest every night while you are battling this cough. By not getting the right amount you are just prolonging it. Your body needs rest, so go to bed a few hours earlier than usual.

Another great remedy that you can do for a cough is to heat up some water and add salt to it. Then gargle the water. This will help to cure that nasty cough.

Make sure that you are getting all the right nutrients you are needing for yourself as well as your baby while you are dealing with this cough. If you are adding extra vitamin C to your meals, this will help.
