Could Barack Obama Be Assassinated?

Could it Happen?

Jimmy Smith
Barack Obama was recently elected as the first African American president in United States history. It is a major sign of the growing racial equality in the United States. A major topic of debate in the past was when we, as a people, would see an African American president in office and that day has finally arrived. It was a historic election, starting with Barack Obama's victory in the Democratic primaries versus his female counterpart, Hilary Clinton. Had Clinton won, we might be talking about the first female president in United States history. Sarah Palin, would have been the first female vice president in history had John McCain been elected president last night. So, it was an election of many first for our country as a whole.

Many in this country embraced the idea of an African American president, obviously, since Barack Obama was elected late last night, but what about those who don't? Could this pose a threat to Obama himself? Colin Powell, an African American republican, once considered running for President, but dropped out of the race because his wife feared he would be assassinated. Is it a real threat? Is the threat greater for Obama then it would be for a white president? Four presidents have been assassinated, Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKiney and John F. Kennedy. Six presidents have survived assignation attempts, they are Theodore Roosevelt, Andrew Jackson, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Gerald Ford, and most recently Ronald Reagan. An attempt on a president's life has not been attempted for over twenty years. This is probably due to increased security and technology over the past twenty years.

There are many racist in America, of all races and religions. White supremacist and neo-nazis are probably the groups of people who would try to assassinated President Obama. These groups have dwindled in power over the recent years, but still remain as dangerous as ever. Obviously we as a people are living in better times for racial equality and electing Barack Obama is a major step toward that goal, but could it end in his death? How would the African American communities across the country react to such an event? It would be devastating, and I'm sure you can just picture what the inner cities would look like in the event Obama was assassinated.

Websites have already sprung up predicting Obama to be the anti-Christ. Could some insane deranged white supremacist Christian radical, take up a sniper rifle and shoot this great man who represents change and hope for America? Yes, it could happen, and what a horrible day that would be for people of every race, nation and religion.

In conclusion, Barack Obama is going to be a great president for America and an African American president has been long over-due and that time has finally arrived. With the new technology advancements since the last attempt on a president's life, Barack Obama may be safer then even a white president twenty or thirty years ago. This does however, remain to be seen until he serves out his term as President of The United States of America.
