The first novel in the series, The Last Knight, chronicles the quest of an idyllic knight and his unwilling squire as they encounter magic and mystery in a mystical world. Sir Michael, the fourth son of a powerful Noble, has decided to become a knight errant two hundred years too late. His squire Fisk, a streetwise con-man, finds the whole idea preposterous. Bound by the terms of his redemption, Fisk reluctantly follows Sir Michael on his misadventures, while attempting to keep a safe distance.
When the story begins, Fisk is holding the horses while Sir Michael rescues Lady Ceciel from a tower. Unfortunately, our 'Noble Sir' has unwittingly released a woman accused of poisoning her husband and soon becomes a man outside the protection of the law. To satisfy the terms of his redemption, Sir Michael must find the devious Lady Ceciel and return her to justice.
With the innocence of Don Quixote and the magic of Middle Earth, Hilari Bell has created a fantasy world founded on honor, loyalty, and friendship. Sir Michael serves as the patient mentor of a rogue pesimist, while Fisk demonstrates that lofty principles can sometimes inhibit the good they intend to uphold. Together, they learn and grow finding the true potential within each other and themselves.
