Could a Natural Remedy Help You Manage Your Asthma?

Linda M. McCloud

If you suffer from asthma you may be considering trying some natural remedies to help relieve some of your symptoms. You may think what can they hurt? If they are natural they can't have any side effects. They can't hurt me.

This is not necessarily true. Anything you ingest into your body can cause your body to react. These reactions can turn into side effects.

There is also the consideration that a natural remedy may not interact with your correct medication. Plus, a natural medication may not be strong enough to relieve all your symptoms if taken alone.

For all of these reasons, should you really take a natural remedy? Taking a natural remedy should be up to you and your doctor. However, no matter what medications you choose to take (natural or otherwise), you should definitely look at how you are trying to manage your asthma.

Are you making any major mistakes in asthma management?

  • Have you worked out a clear asthma treatment plan with your doctor?
  • Do you monitor your peak flow rate?
  • Do you know what to do if your peak flow rate drops?
  • Do you know what your asthma triggers are?
  • Do you try your best to avoid these triggers?
  • Do you exercise on a regular basis?
  • Do you eat healthy foods?
  • Is your weight at a healthy level?
  • Do you get a restful sleep most nights?
  • Do you see your doctor regularly?

Before you try any new or natural treatments to treat any of your asthma treatments you must follow a asthma treatment plan like the one above. You also should talk to your physician about his ideas on the subject of natural treatments. Then if you decide to try one, you should talk to your pharmacist to make sure the natural products you try will interact with your current medications.

You must take your health seriously. You must take your astma seriously. You also must remember that natural asthma treatments may work and they can also cause side effects, just like normal treatment plans can.
