Could Some Computer Features Hinder You from Learning?

Julie Wenzel
Sometimes I feel like my computer makes me a bad speller. Many times, my computer corrects my spelling mistake before I even realize I spelled it wrong. Do you think this could cause you to continuously spell a word wrong for the rest of your life?

You learn things based on repetition. Think how many times one probably have sang the ABC song to finally get it down. Your brain doesn't care if it's right or wrong. If you keep seeing it a certain way over and over, that's what you'll remember.

When I use some form of Word Processor, I notice that my computer corrects everything I type. It fixes spelling, capitalization problems, punctuation, and sentence structure. Though it is not always 100% right, (I don't think), it really leaves to where you don't have to think that hard to get it right. The red and green line under your words should tell you enough of what to do.

The feature that has been fixing these spelling errors is called "Autocorrect" and can be disabled. It was automatically turned on when I first used it. There is also a feature on there that allows you to put in a word and then you put in what word you want to automatically correct as you type. Could this possibly be for people who know they constantly type a word wrong, and want it fixed right away?

Here are a few words Autocorrect fixes...

And - If I accidentally mix the letters up to spell it like "adn" it fixes it.

Away - If spelled as "awya" it will be fixed

Continuously - Sometimes I spell this word right. However I have caught myself spelling it, continuisly.

Operation - If you put two "p"s in there and spell it opperation it will fix it.

Possible - If you put an a instead of an i, it will correct it.

The - When I accidentally spell it as "teh" it will correct it for me.

I often wondered that by those continuous fixes, our brains will never really learn the correct way to type them. I may always type "The" wrong, but never even realize it. It's automatic.

There are other words out there that I may commonly misspell, but don't really have to look at how it is really spelled because spell check many times gives me the correct word right away. Unless I force myself to type the word out correctly without just letting spell check do it, I will never get to learn it by constantly doing it right.

Computers can be a great learning tool. But I think many times they make things so easy for people that they do not have to think on their own.

I don't neccessarily agree with this because most of the time we know the correct way to spell, but the correctional feature on the computer helps us to finish our work quicker.
