Could a Sony Playstation 3 Price Drop Be on the Horizon?

Various reports indicate that the future of the Sony Playstation 3 could be uncertain due to the exorbitantly high cost of the console. A great deal of attention is being given to the fact that the Sony Playstation 3 is the least affordable player out of the three biggest video game consoles currently on the market: Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, and Sony Playstation 3

Sony has attempted in the past to justify the high cost of the Playstation 3 by lauding performance over price. "Cheapest isn't always the most successful, it's what you get for your dollar," claims President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, Jack Tretton. According to Chris Roper of IGN Entertainment, sales of the Sony Playstation 3 have lagged far behind both the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox. It would seem that Tretton's statement is extremely inaccurate as far as it pertains to the Sony Playstation 3.

A simple search on the Walmart.com site will reveal that the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360 both sell for $249, while the Sony Playstation 3 console comes in at a whopping $399. Consumers have let their voices be heard with the woefully lagging sales volume of the Playstation 3 compared to the other two gaming systems.

One particular video gaming giant has spoken out by making a rather ominous statement for their future with the Sony Playstation 3. Activision Blizzard, Inc. is the American holding company for Activision and Blizzard Entertainment, the company is the force behind the two highly popular video games series; Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk, among many other popular titles. Robert Kotick, CEO and president of Activision Blizzard, Inc, recently issued the following statement:

They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony," he said. "When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console.

The drop threat from Activision Blizzard proves that there is very little room for doubt that gaming companies are not happy with Sony's refusal to lower the retail cost of the Playstation 3 thus far. The buzz over the Activision statement is hot, with some analysts stating that Kotick and Activision Blizzard are bluffing, while others are saying that Sony should take the drop threat seriously and at least consider lowering the Playstation 3 cost.

If Sony does lower the price of the Playstation 3, we should see the price cuts as early as August of this current year. The battle wages on.

A price drop would certainly be nice. Thanks for the info. :-)

It is expensive right now. I am not a gamer, but I'm sure that those who are would be happy to see a drop in price.
