Couldn't Get to Work Until Closing Time

Enough Bad Luck for One Day

LarrWayne Po
The story begins: I added over 2 gallons of gasoline to my truck, then went home a half a mile away and parked it for the night. The next morning, my truck would not crank. It has never failed to start before, when the battery properly turned the engine over. Normally , it always cranks first or second crank. That is out of the ordinary happening number one.

It sounded like it was out of fuel even though I knew it was supposed to have fuel. As it was later verified, that was the problem. (The truck has a lock gas cap, so the gasoline thief was not an untrained amateur). It was out of fuel. That is out of the ordinary happening number two.

I have had gasoline stolen out of my truck before, but have never had all of it stolen to the extent that it would not crank. That is out of the ordinary happening number three.

I normally have gas in my gas can, for emergencies and lawn mower usage, about 360 days out of the year. This was not one of those days. That is out of the ordinary happening number four.

Due to numerous tries to crank my truck, the battery was now dead. So I have a vehicle that is out of gas with a dead battery, two problems at once. That is out of the ordinary circumstance number five.

I only have one neighbor. I found my jumper cables, but his car had a dead battery and needed a jump off too on the same day. That is out of the ordinary happening number six.

I have or had two battery chargers, that can be plugged into an AC outlet. I could not find either of the battery chargers. Apparently they have both been stolen or I left them at work for no reason, I can justify to myself. For me, not having a battery charger in my truck is out of the ordinary happening number seven.

I found a small 12 Volt power supply and connected the wires of the power supply to the truck's battery by splicing the wires to some battery clamps. A low amperage trickle charger could take 24 hours or more to fully charge a car battery, but it was worth a try. I also plugged my small solar powered low amp trickle charger into the cigarette lighter plug in.

Next, I grab a gas can and walk to the store, that is a half a mile away to get some gasoline. The store, normally open 7 days a week, was closed for the day to have the parking lot repaved. That is out of the ordinary happening number eight.

The pavement crew was getting ready to leave. If I had been 10 minutes later getting there, they would have been gone. They had 2 gallons of gasoline in a container and told me to pour the gasoline into my container. I went to a gasoline station, that was closed, and still got gasoline. That is out of the ordinary happening number nine.

I got back to the house about dark, added the gasoline, and cranked my truck first try. Will a boss believe all of a lengthy hard to believe excuse like this for not opening up a store all day? Time will tell. If so, it might be considered out of the ordinary happening number ten.

It looks like bad luck struck again. I accidently deleted this article and had to write it again.

Excellent story, and full of ambition. It is far, far better to have one of those days once, than the crisis and inconsistency spread out over the year ♥
