Counting Crows' August and Everything After: A '90s Music Review

To me, the '90s was a great decade for moving pop music. From Nirvana to Hanson, and Garth Brooks to Ludicrous, music in the '90s was vibrant very much alive. But one album sums up everything that was perfect to me about music in the '90s: Counting Crow's release, August and Everything After.

The CD reminds me of warm summer nights (as August would imply) and the way things continuously change. Adam Duritz, front man of the Counting Crows, writes and sings every word of this music, and his voice is perfect for depicting the haunting truth in each song with the lyrics that go deeper than the surface.

Possibly the most popular song from the Counting Crows in the '90s was from August and Everything After -- Mr. Jones. Mr. Jones, is an upbeat song about two men, bonding over beautiful women and dreams to become someone. In Perfect Blue Buildings, Duritz sings about life being seemingly perfect on the inside, but on the inside, "there's a dead man trying to get it out." The Counting Crows', Anna Beings has always been one of my personal favorites, not just from August and Everything After, but collectively. It details the changing of a relationship from friendship to something more, and all of the complications that brings. Ghost Train by the Counting Crows is also about a relationship, this time between two strangers who meet on a train, each running away from something or nothing. Then there is Raining in Baltimore, another favorite from the Counting Crows. The piano based song, mixed with Duritz' haunting voice and distressing lyrics tell the story of running away from a lost love, while everything else has stayed the same.

August and Everything After by the Counting Crows is a great CD from the '90s that is still relevant today in the 2000s. The songs from Round Here to A Murder of One, all come together in one timeless album. To pick up a copy of the Counting Crows' first CD, visit any of the following websites:
