Country Music Legend Merle Haggard Honored by Kennedy Center

Country music legend Merle Haggard will be featured in a two hour CBS special "The Kennedy Center Honors" tonight and Charlotte area fans can tune in on WBTV 3 locally at 9 pm.

Haggard has been chosen for the Kennedy Center awards due to a lifetime spent in country music. He attended the ceremony in person in Washington, DC on Dec 5 where he was treated to musical tributes by longtime friends Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson. They were joined in the celebration by contemporary artists Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill, Jamey Johnson, Kid Rock, Miranda Lambert and Brad Paisley.

Also honored at the event for their contributions to American culture were lyricist Jerry Herman, dancer and choreographer Bill T. Jones, pop icon Paul McCartney and TV personality Oprah Winfrey.

Merle Haggard is known for his long career in country music built on powerful hit songs like "Mama Tried" and "Okie From Muskogee."
