"Country Strong" and "Burlesque" Leading Contenders for 'Best Original Song' at the Academy Awards

Cher and Gwyneth Paltrow Tug the Heartstrings with Their Respective Songs

As essential to a film as good writing and fine acting, music sets the tone, whether its Alan Silvestri's energetic "Back to the Future" score or those triumphant opening bars that make the hearts of "Star Wars" fans beat a little faster.

Although some film fans don't put that much emphasis on the music categories during awards season, two notable 2010 films contain tunes that have become the front runners for 'Best Original Song' at the upcoming Academy Awards.

"You Haven't Seen the Last of Me," the Golden Globe-winning song from " Burlesque ," has lyrics that go much deeper than the plot of the film.

Cher plays Tess, the beleaguered owner of a Los Angeles night club specializing in burlesque-style revues.

Warding off her creditors and an over-eager land developer, Tess is heading home for some sleep, but her musical director asks her to try out a new song for the show.

A weary Tess starts off slowly, but that beautiful voice cranks her voice into high gear, reminding viewers that Cher has kept that talent under wraps for years.

"You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" is both Tess' song of defiance and Cher 's declaration that she is not ready to retire just yet. The song also serves as Cher 's star turn in "Burlesque" and it is an absolute show-stopper.

"Coming Home," the Golden Globe-nominated song from " Country Strong ," is a song about reaffirmation and going back to ones roots.

Gwyneth Paltrow plays Kelly Canter, a 6-time Grammy winner whose career has been derailed by alcohol, drugs and a personal tragedy.

Kelly has one last chance to find her footing in the country music world. Embarking on a cross-country tour, Kelly really wants to sing "Coming Home," a song she thinks is meant for her.

Unfortunately, the song's composer thinks the tune is better suited for Chiles Stanton (Leighton Meester), an up-and-coming singer who joined Kelly's tour.

Chiles records a beautiful rendition of "Coming Home," but she doesn't have the life experience to give it credibility.

Several scenes later, Kelly Canter delivers her version of the song, a performance filled with hope, sadness and notes of redemption.

These two Golden Globe-nominated songs are sure to cause some buzz at the ceremony on January 16, which should carry over into the rest of awards season.
