Country at War

An Independence Day Poem for the 4th of July

Tara M. Clapper
I saw a wolf in the woods,
just a minute from the road.
He broke from the pack to explore me:
Threat/food.

I saw a banner in the sky,
my whole life it's been there.
Stripes with white stars on a blue field:
Threat/protection.

I see yellow ribbons around trees,
and I thank the troops.
But others told me to leave when I spoke out against the Oil War:
Citizens/enemies.
Leaders/friends.
