Country Wisdom - Tips for a Happier Life

Malcolm Tatum
Most of us get stressed out with pace of life today. Sometimes that stress leads to burnout that affects work along with our relationships. In order to avoid experiencing this type of emotional and physical collapse, taking the time to remember a few tried and true of wisdom from the country make a huge difference in the quality of life.

Step 1

Avoid hitting brick walls. Country wisdom tells us that it is a lot easier to plow around a stump than it is to blast it out of the way. That approach saves time as well as making it easier to avoid frustration. Instead of wasting your days trying to find ways to remove obstacles, focus your attention on circumventing them and moving forward with your goals.

Step 2

Realize that you worry too much. Farmers know well that a lot of the things people worry about never come to pass, so why waste time dwelling on these remote possibilities. Focus on what is likely to take place, determine how you will handle the situation, and forget the rest.

Step 3

Watch your mouth. Many of us get in trouble because we speak first and think later. Rural wisdom observes that it is never possible to unsay a cruel word. Consider your words carefully, as well as to whom those words are addressed. A little consideration may save your bacon down the road.

Step 4

Talk less and listen more. Country wisdom tells us that silence is sometimes the highest honor you can give to others. When a friend needs someone to hear their pain, just listen. Don't jump in with possible solutions, or sharing anecdotes about how you went through the same thing. For just a little while, let it be all about your friend, and not you. There will be plenty of time later to share your anecdotes and offer advice if your friend asks for it.

Step 5

Drop the grudges. Rural wisdom tells us that it doesn't take a very big person to carry even a huge grudge. Hanging on to old grievances, real or perceived, does nothing but sap your energy and cloud your judgement. Deal with the situation, put it in the past, and move on to something better.

Tips and Warnings

A large portion of folk and rural wisdom is based on centuries of observing human nature. That wisdom is taught anew to each generation, keeping it ever fresh. No matter who you are, where you live or work, or what your circumstances happen to be, there is a good chance you can use these and other examples of this timeless wisdom to make life a little better
