Couples: 5 Ways to Avoid Arguing Throughout the Holiday Season

Stephanie Modkins
Are you in a relationship that always goes sour around the holidays? You and your significant other fight like cats and dogs because you can't seem to agree on anything regarding turkey day or old St. Nick. Avoid reliving this scenario this year. Below are five ways to reduce your chances of arguing throughout the holiday season and ruining a period meant to be special.

1. Agree on a budget.

Don't spend so much money that the person sharing the bills with you gets stressed out. Discuss how much you want to pay on gifts, food and entertainment. Then, honor your word and only break your promise with the blessings of your loved one.

2. Be quiet about in-laws.

No couple can avoid arguing throughout the holiday season if either one is taking pot shots at the other's family. Keep your thoughts to yourself about your sweetheart's parents and siblings. Remember, you live with him and only see them on occasion. So, you can put up with their bad (or weird) behavior - temporarily - without making any complaints.

3. Help with chores/clean-up.

Understandably, chores can turn a man and woman against each other. No one likes to feel like a slave or whipping boy. For this reason, do your part to support any holiday celebrations at your house. Don't let your significant other bear all of the weight of shopping, cooking, hosting and cleaning. Equally participate. And, if you really can't stand any of this kind of stuff, hire out for help.

4. Don't act "silly" at parties.

Another big reason couples can't stop arguing during the holiday season is because of what happens at festive events. You probably can relate to this reality well if your partner likes to drink too much, tell off jokes or play the fool when he's out. Be the bigger person in the relationship and initiate an honest talk. Explain how you feel when he does whatever it is that embarrasses you. You might be surprised how quickly he reforms once he realizes the way he's hurting you.

5. Set rules regarding children.

Children can cause a lot of problems amongst their parents around the holidays. They know just how to control you and your loved one with only a few sorrowful words or tears. Be strong and switch gears on them. Stand as a united front on issues like curfews, overnight friends and pricey electronic gear. You are the adult and they have to enjoy life on your terms.

Use these 5 suggestions and you can avoid arguing with your special someone throughout the holiday season. You can actually have a happy turkey day and merry Christmas without all of the bickering.
