Couples Halloween Costumes for Office Parties

Kelly O'Neil
So your office is having a Halloween costume party and you're stumped for ideas. You can't get away with not going in costume (your boss is fairly adamant on that point), and your significant other is fine with being dragged along in costume . . . that is, as long as they don't have to put any thought into it. Never fear! Here is a list of costumes for couples that are not too risqué for an office party, aren't so awkward that you knock things over with it, and that you'll be fairly comfortable in.

General Tips

It is important to remember that an office party is probably not the best place to dawn that Sexy Snow White or Chippendales costume that you've been eyeing for years. Better to err on the conservative side of things than to be known as that trampy girl in human resources for the rest of your career. Also, try not to typecast yourself. If you are naturally shy, don't go as a schoolgirl or teacher's pet. If you are, well, not so nice, better not add insult to injury by going as a witch. Whatever you choose, just remember, you will have to see these people back in business suits on Monday morning.

Cartoon Characters

Cartoon characters, especially those with a little old school flavor, are very popular for Halloween costumes. Paint the office pink as Fred and Wilma Flintstone, Betty and Barney Rubble, or George and Jane Jetson. Couples such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and Papa Smurf and Smurfette (oh come on, I know your remember 'The Smurfs') require quite a bit more work, but are worth the effort. Any of the many superheroes are fun couples. He-Man and She-Ra, Superman & Wonderwoman, and Batman and Batgirl make for a really fun entrance.

Historical Figures

General historical figures are easy to come up with, and for bonus points, don't require any awkward explanation (like, I'm Theodore Roosevelt's cousin ... duh), as Halloween costumes shouldn't need too much explanation. Go as a pirate and his wench, a cowboy and cowgirl, WWII sailor and arm candy, chief and Indian princess, king and queen, soldier and nurse, and any other number of pairings will be fun and easy.

If you do decide to go as a famous couple, and don't want to spend a long time explaining exactly who you are, then try to stay away from the more obscure pairings. Fred and Ginger, Sonny and Cher, Robin Hood and Maid Marian, and Romeo and Juliet are all good options.

Food

Food pairings can make great costumes. I would not suggest those big, awkward, foamy costumes that can be hot, uncomfortable, and downright dangerous. Peanut butter and jelly make a great pair, because all you need are appropriate colored sweat suits. Consider wearing nametags to make sure. You can do the same thing with salt and pepper. Fruits and vegetables can be made by wearing the right colors of clothing and then adorning yourself with all kinds of fake leaves and vines. These are all very simple, and work well for those of you with very little preparation time.

Occupations

Cop and robber, politician and wife (or husband), construction worker and hot babe to whistle at, doctor and nurse, nurse and patient, waitress and waiter, chef and waitress, are all great occupations. Resist the urge to go as your actual occupation, as you will be considered a real party pooper if you do.

Just get creative and have some fun. In any case it will be such a kick to see your boss walking around in a Superman costume and that evil woman from accounting dressed as a witch. Have a safe and Happy Halloween.
