Cover Girl Eye Enhancers Eyeshadow Review

Julie James
Over the years, I've had to keep buying larger and larger makeup bags to accommodate my ever-growing collection of products. I'm a junkie, and I know it (and love it.) I recently decided that I needed to go through my makeup bag and get rid of stuff I don't use. The product searched for, pulled out first, and put in the "save" pile first was Cover Girl Eye Enhancers Trio Eye Shadow, Golden Sunset.

I buy this eye shadow at Wal-Mart, or Ulta. It is very easy to find at mass-market retailers, drugstores, and online as well. I usually pay between $4 to $5, depending where I purchase. The product comes in a plastic container wherein the bottom part is blue, and the lid is clear, allowing for a true view of the eye shadow colors. The lid snaps shut with a very reassuring click. I have never, ever had this compact come open in my makeup bag.

To use, you flip up the clear, hinged, lid and apply the shadow(s) with the included sponge-tipped applicator, or, if you prefer, your own applicator. I use the included applicator as I've always found it to be more than adequate. One end of the applicator features a rounded tip, while the other end is more of a pointy tip (like you would use for lining.)

With so many eye shadows out there, why would I recommend this one?

~~These particular shades are neutral enough for essentially anyone to wear. But, if you have blue eyes like I do, these colors seriously enhance the blue.

~~This shadow has serious staying power. I can apply this in the morning, and it does not crease on me until evening (this is due to oily eyelids.)

~~All three included colors ("morning cocoa"-the darkest, "golden sunrise"-the middle shade, and "first light"-the lightest shade) can stand on their own. If I'm in an only-one-color mood, I can swipe any one of these on my eyelid by itself and look appropriately put-together.

~~Even using the cutesy names for the colors, Cover Girl has hit the nail on the head with each color description. The darkest shade is, in fact, the color of cocoa; the middle shade is golden; the "first light" is a very light yellowish color.

~~If I want to get all dolled-up for whatever reason, I will use two, or all three shades. When I do this, I place the colors where I want (using the applicator), then lightly blend with a fingertip. This product blends together seamlessly.

~~As long as I don't overload the applicator, I have no trouble with this shadow sprinkling under my eyes during application. Please note, I almost always swipe the applicator under running water first to slightly dampen, then swipe the applicator across the color, then apply to my lid. Even if I don't dampen the applicator, I don't have sprinkly problems. I also do not have a problem with this product getting in my eyes unless I accidentally tough the applicator on my eyeball (like when using the color to line under bottom lashes.) If I do get it in my eye, I can feel the dry, powdery feeling, but my natural tears "wash" the product to the corner of my eye wherein I can whisk it away with a cotton swab or clean finger.

~~I can apply this shadow in a slightly dampened state (as mentioned above), and it's still very blendable once dry...I have not always found this to be the case with other shadows.

~~These colors are "true." What I mean by that is what you see is what you get. These shadows come off the applicator looking exactly the same shade as they look in the container...some of you know what I'm talking about. You don't get a mere hint of the color (unless you apply it as so.)

~~These shadows give a subtle shimmer. If you are looking for a matte finish, this particular color palette isn't for you. I happen to like the, again, subtle shimmer, as it adds just a touch of oomph. Again, I stress "subtle." You won't look like you applied that glittery shadow that was all the rage in 8th grade.

~~I've used other sponge tip applicators in the past wherein the sponge part ends up coming totally off, and I have to try to glue it back on. I have never had one of these sponges come off the applicator.

This shadow provides such a seamless look, that the "Enhancers" part of the title is totally true. It "enhances" what you've already got, and just makes your eyes more noticeable. As long as you blend, this product looks beautiful anytime.
