Covergirl Lip Perfection Lipstick: 7-Day Moisturizing Test

The Ad Claims Soft, Smooth Lips in 7 Days. This Experiment Put that Claim to the Test

Daniella Nicole
I am registered with Cover Girl and recently got an email from them advising me of a special promotion. I could try their new Covergirl Lip Perfection Lipstick and get free shipping on it before it was available in stores.

One of the retailers participating in the offer was Soap.com. After some deliberation and reviewing the limited colors shown on the Soap.com site and the Facebook promo page, I chose the #390 Sweetheart shade. I already had a five dollar credit at Soap.com, so I ordered the $6.99 lipstick, paying only $1.99. My order was filled and shipped the same day. When it arrived the next day, I couldn't wait to try it.

The advertising for the Covergirl Lip Perfection lipstick claims "Enriched with Silk Therapy Complex, our formula helps sustain moisture levels and helps create soft, smooth, beautiful lips in just 7 days (vs bare lips)." I applied it and the first thought that came into my mind was 'Granny lipstick'. It was a shiny retro pink color that was not at all what I expected. However, unlike lipsticks of the past, it did not have that thick or waxy feeling that would leave lips feeling dry later on. Covergirl's Lip Perfection lipstick did feel moist on my lips. Not lipgloss moist, but more moist than lipstick or lipstain. It did not leave my lips feeling dried out, as many lipsticks can.

There was a 'taste' to the lipstick that was one part old-fashioned lipstick and one part something I was not able to identify. It was not highly favorable, but it wasn't highly repulsive either. It would be nice if a lipstick would be created that didn't taste like lipstick, but if this product really does as it claims, it will certainly be one very large step in the right direction, despite the taste.

Day One

The color lasted quite awhile, but I did feel the need to reapply after eating or drinking a lot of water to help replenish the moist feeling, more than the color.

Within several applications on the first day I noticed that my lips seemed more smooth. I didn't know if that was supposed to happen, but on Day One, it seemed very much like my lips were a bit more plump or filled out from the fewer visible creases.

Day Two

I usually have to apply lip gloss or some kind of lip balm multiple times daily, especially due to the large amount of water I drink throughout the day. It wasn't until later in the evening that I felt like I needed something on my lips. I had gone most of day without needing to apply anything.

My lips felt a bit softer and smoother than usual on Day Two. In the evening, I did apply the lipstick several times, mostly to be sure I gave the product a fair shot by using it several times daily during this experiment.

Day Three

Not a lot to report for Day Three because it was very similar to Day Two. It wasn't until much later in the day before I felt like I needed something on my lips. I made it a point to apply the lipstick several times before bedtime.

My lips do feel very soft and do not need nearly as much moisture as usual. The color from the lipstick is very long-lasting and seems to work almost like a lipstain. It doesn't just wipe off, but soap and water or a make up remover will remove all traces of it. I should clarify that. The product that is still on top of the lips will wipe off, however, it seems to stain the lips with color and that is what needs to be washed off or removed with makeup remover.

Day Four

Today is a lot like the last two days. My lips seem a little fuller, with less creasing. It isn't a 'collagen' kind of fullness, but it is enough to be noticeable to me.

It's been another day of not feeling a need to put anything on my lips until later in the day, but doing so anyway for the experiment. I am more than half-way through this experiment and am interested in how much things will change before it is over.

Day Five

Nothing new to report today. Everything today seems to be the same as previous days, including not 'needing' to moisturize my lips with Covergirl Lip Perfection lipstick until much later in the day. As in previous days, I did make sure to apply the lipstick several times for the purpose of this experiment.

Day Six

One more day left (after today) on the experiment and I am not expecting any further changes. Today is very much like the past few days, with no real change in lip plumping. I do wonder what would happen if I stopped using this product. Would my lips de-plump? How long would that take to happen? I wonder how long-lasting the results are when you aren't continually using the product.

Day Seven

The frosty color never did 'grow' on me, nor did the taste of the product. However, I do like the moisturizing and minor plumping affects. All of the plumping I achieved was in the first two or three days. The moisturizing seemed keep working until day five when it seemed to hold at the same level.

Conclusion

The lipstick held up well through this experiment. It kept the original shape and didn't feel flimsy like it was going to break off easily.

The case is simple and attractive, with some 'mirroring'. The color of the lipstick I chose for was not one I would buy again and the frostiness of the shade has me worried about the other colors. However, I will buy this lipstick again, albeit in a different shade, to see if that solves the problem. If they are all this frosty I may pass on using this product long-term. In style or not, the frosty lips look is just not me.

If you want fuller looking lips or have chronically dry lips you may really like this product. It is long lasting, it really works as advertised and the $6.99 price-tag is reasonable, although I am not sure if that will be the regular store price. It may have been special price for the promo.

Some stores will allow you to return any cosmetic product you are not happy with, so it would be a good idea to purchase this product from one of those stores the first time you buy it. The color shown on the case (at the bottom) of the Sweetheart shade is close to the color of the lipstick, but did not truly reflect how frosty it appeared on my lips. This may or may not be the case with the other shades.

All of the shades are shown on the Covergirl website, where it may be easier using their guide or "Get Colormatched" feature to pick a great shade prior to purchase. There are 44 shades shown on the website in browns, lilacs/mauves/burgundies, nudes/corals/reds and pinks to roses.
