CoverGirl NatureLuxe Collection: Spring 2011

Gwendolyn Taylor
With all the recent surge of natural and green friendly beauty products, it is about time that a mass-merchandised makeup brand such as CoverGirl should come out with their own version of affordable and eco-safe products. Although brands such as Physician's Formula and Neutrogena have dabbled in it, their prices still tend to be high when catering to the general market, especially, teens and young adults. Even with their new model for the line, infamous country singer Taylor Swift, CoverGirl's new line appeals to all makeup wearers, with an additional plus of being inexpensive. The question is: is it really any good?

The collection contains foundations and lip gloss balms. The packaging used for this collection contains bioresin (a form of plastic derived from sugarcanes), which is environmentally sustainable, renewable, and biodegradable. The new "Liquid Silk Foundation" that is featured in this collection has SPF 10 and contains extracts of the following natural ingredients: natural jojoba, rosehip, and cucumber water. These ingredients are considered be better fro your skin in comparison to heavier feeling emollients that are found in most other foundations. They also provide a lighter weight, smoother feeling on your skin. These foundations are available in 14 shades ranging from light ivory to dark tawny, so you will bound to be able to find a true matching foundation shade for your skin tone. The lip gloss balms in this collection contain SPF 15, and are comprised of natural moisturizers such as mango butter, shea butter, and other natural butters, which are all more beneficial to you than regular heavier feeling oils. They also do a more efficient job in moisturizing your lips. They are available in 16 different shades, with colors ranging from subtle peachy nude shades, to classic reds, and from deep berry plums, to bold bright corals. They come in a lipstick like tube packaging for easy and mess free application.

The great thing about CoverGirl cosmetics is the availability and their affordability. This new beauty product line falls in the same price range as their regular cosmetics line. These products can be found in your local mass-merchandise stores such as Target, neighborhood drugstores such as CVS, beauty supply stores such as ULTA, and even with online beauty product and cosmetic retailers. Are these 100% completely natural? No. However, for the price and the concept, it is definitely one good step in the right direction, for you and for the environment.
