Covering the College and Pro Scene: Basketball and Football

Preface: Sean Taylor, you were set to become on the greatest safety tandems in the league for the next few years for the Redskins. I've seen you described as a humble, caring young man, with a bright future.

You will be sorely missed. The community you grew up in loved you; that much we know.

With a somber heart, Sports Talk now moves to other, less meaningful topics in the sports world:

-What the heck? The "Hey, buddy!" system of college football is back. Just take a look at Texas A&M and Ole Miss. Why would you do that do yourself, hiring somebody in less than a week for a head coaching position at a Division I school?

You know who should be fired? A couple of ADs...

-All these firings in general. Sure, Chan Gailey didn't win you an ACC Championship. But he never made you look completely bad season to season, and with the academic standards at GT, it's not the easiest thing in the world, winning big games consistently.

Sure, Houston Nutt didn't always win, but his 8-4 record this year, coupled with an upset of then-#1 LSU, should've gotten his a raise, not caused him to leave.

Sometimes, greed overcomes common sense. Some coaches do not deserve the fractured fan bases they are given; they do a good job with what they've got. That pisses me off.

-So, who really is the best 2-loss team in the country now? I love how some experts claim LSU is still best of their category....WRONG.

If Georgia played LSU in the SEC Championship, I bet you the Bulldogs would be the favorites. Because they can flat out run the ball with Knoshawn Moreno and Thomas Brown, something LSU's "amazing" defense hasn't been able to defend these past few weeks. And that opens the play action pass.

I honestly believe the BCS has one thing right: Georgia is the best 2-loss team right now. But, my team beat 'em when it counts, so right now, the best team from the SEC East may not be representing the division in the Championship game.

-Johan Santana...a Yankee? Oh, heck no. If you've read an MLB posting from me before, chances are you know how I feel about the Yankees and big payrolls (Red Sox, you're next, by the way...). I sincerely hope New York does NOT get Santana, who is one of the top pitchers in the game; I won't say he's the best because he may not have even been top-5 last year. But he's consistently dangerous.

The Twins' GM should be fired if both Torii Hunter AND Johan Santana get signed away.

-Duke basketball is back.

They stomped the mess outta Wisconsin last night, and I saw some freshman who are gonna be sick to watch the next few years. That dunk highlight was nice.

In fact, the ACC as a whole is fairly dominant right now...5-1 against the Big Ten, the only loss being Georgia Tech (who is still building itself up). Pretty good numbers.

-You know what I'd like to see? An SEC vs. ACC Challenge in basketball, especially this year. Just imagine:

Tennessee vs. North Carolina
Duke vs. Vanderbilt
Clemson vs. Mississippi
Virginia vs. Arkansas
Florida State vs. Kentucky
Wake Forest vs. Alabama

And you have many other possibilities. T'would be fun, no?

-I'm picking it now:

Green Bay 31, Dallas 28

That could be considered an upset, I guess. I just think Ryan Grant makes enough plays on the ground, and Terell Owens is held to one TD and about 123 yards receiving. I'm putting Farve ahead of Romo just because of experience, and personal bias

Of course, because I've picked 'em, Farve is gonna have his worst game of the season. Sheesh.

-Monday Night Football, Pittsburgh vs. Miami: The biggest disgrace to the NFL for the year. I will say no more.

Have a great day!
