Covering Expenses when They're More Than Your Income

Creatively Increasing Income

With the state of the economy the past few years there are a number of people that are still in the process of recovery. Some that found themselves managing to scrap by and cover expenses even when the economy was at its worst and layoffs at there highest are now finding it difficult to cover all of the monthly expenses. There are some things that can be done to make up the difference when you notice that your income isn't going to cover your upcoming expenses.

Hopefully you have a budget in place that allows you to see what your expenses are going to be for the coming month. Ideally a month is how much notice you have that you're going to be short in the finances department. Taking a look to find areas that you can cut expenses immediately is one of the best ways to help income cover expenses. There are somethings that you can do to earn additional money to help cover the expenses that you can't meet with your regular income.

Recycling Metal

Metals such as aluminum cans, steel, brass, copper and scraps can help you to earn enough to cover an expense or purchase something to eat. The rates of purchase for these will vary by type and location. Ideally you'll be able to fill a truck bed and/or trailer with them but if you are limited to the back of an SUV or small car truck you have to make the most of the space. The more you have in one trip the more you'll earn. Crush everything that you can so it takes up less space and combine the types of metal. Clean metal will get you more money since a deduction is taken for dirt when it's weighed.

Take a Walk

While you might have anticipated a rough time there is still the possibility that you won't have enough things to recycle around your home. You can take a walk and collect metals along the way. As you do this you'll not only be helping yourself but the environment as well.

On-line Content Sites

There are a number of on-line content sites that can assist you in earning additional income to cover your expenses. That is if your day job is something other than a writer. If you're already a writer then you need to increase the amount of content that you're producing to help cover the coming month's expenses. Those on-line content sites offer a variety of options for earning such as ad revenue share and upfront payments.

Neighbors

Ask your neighbors about doing housekeeping or yard work. The pay might not be much if they don't have a lot to do but every little bit helps. If you were to clean two or three house a week at $20 a house that's a maximum of $60 which can be used to purchase groceries.

Back to Basics

When income isn't covering expenses you have to go back to basics. Things like the amount of money you spend on gasoline and groceries can be controlled. A large bag of leg quarters, rice, and some canned vegetables can go a long way to feeding you through that rough month. You can get a large bag of noodles (provided you don't have dietary restrictions) and be sure to eat all month long.

The main thing to remember when you're in a bind where you can't meet your expenses is that you have to increase your work effort and immediately reduce expenses. There are a number of other ways to increase your income to help meet expenses; you just have to think instead of panicking.
