Cowboy Chic Decor: Copper Star Bench

Landra Lynn Jacobs
Wooden benches look great both inside and out, making them a great seating addition. This copper star bench is a very versatile piece for any Cowboy Chic style space.

For this project, you will need (per bench):

- One unfinished wooden bench (available at garden supply and home improvement stores)
- Medium or fine grit sandpaper
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Brown Boots
- Krylon Premium Metallic Paint in Copper Foil
- Cardstock
- Pencil
- Eight inch star shaped stencil
- Four inch star shaped stencil
- Craft knife
- Self healing mat
- Masking tape or painter's tape
- Craft paper or dissembled paper bag
- Sponge brush
- Polyurethane sealant
- Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth

Cover the space in which you will be crafting this Cowboy Chic bench with sheets of old newspaper and/or a large drop cloth. Carefully sand the outside of the unfinished wooden bench using medium or fine grit sandpaper sheets. (Use extra effort on any rough edges or wood knots.) Wipe down the bench with a tack cloth or other similar style soft cloth to remove all sanding dust and debris.

Prime the entire bench using three coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. (You should not notice any wood coloring or pattern underneath the primer. If so, continue to add primer coats.) Dry completely. Paint the bench with four to five coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Brown Boots. Let the bench set overnight.

Place three cardstock pieces flat on the self healing mat. In pencil, trace one star shape on each piece of paper creating one eight inch star and two four inch stars. Carefully cut out each star design with a craft knife. Discard the paper cutout and keep the remaining cardstock paper.

Adhere the cardstock to the back of the bench with masking tape or painter's tape. Place the larger star shape in the middle, surrounded by the two smaller star shapes. Cover all areas except the exposed star shapes with craft paper and/or a dissembled paper bag. Spray the exposed star shapes using three to four coats of Krylon Premium Metallic Paint in Copper Foil. Set overnight.

Remove all tape and paper from the bench. Use several thick coats of polyurethane sealant and a sponge brush on the bench. Cure for a few days before using the bench.
