Cowfish Longhorn - A Very Cool Looking and Popular Fish

Shannon Frye
The cowfish looks like a box with horns. It's a very neat fish to look at and very popular in the fish market. These fish can reach over a foot and a half so you cannot keep them in any fish tank which is smaller than 125 gallons. You cannot purchase this fish and place it in a 30 gallon tank unless you are planning on upgrading the tank once the fish gets larger. These fish are mainly yellow and white with big long horns on the front. They are interesting to look at but somewhat difficult to take care of. You need an established tank to take care of this fish.

This fish, like most other fish, will require you to keep the tank temperature at less than 78 degrees. Every fish that I have ever seen requires the same temperature so you will not have any problems with different fish requiring different temperatures, just make sure that the temperature does not fluctuate through out the day more than a couple of degrees. You will want to purchase a heater so that the tank stays at the same temperature. Do not place the tank near windows or door ways that will let air in.

These fish are peaceful but they can be poisonous. You can keep them in a reef tank but you must be careful with them because they will eat little pieces off of your live rock or coral. They are not eating the coral, just eating little things that grow from it. These fish should usually be the first when introduced to a new fish tank and they should be the only cowfish in the tank. Cowfish do not tolerate other cowfish and they might become territorial and aggressive.

Since these fish are very slow eaters and are not as fast as other fish you should not place fish which will eat everything into your fish tank. Make sure that your cowfish gets to eat just like everybody else. Other fish will quickly eat up all of the food and leave the cowfish with nothing. Perhaps you will want to feed your fish a lot of food and a large variety. Try feeding the fish flake food as well as frozen food and give them enough so that other fish don't eat it right away.

Cowfish are excellent fish to keep in any saltwater tank. There is not another fish that looks like the cowfish. You can purchase them from certain pet stores and you can purchase them online also. They are usually around forty dollars for a small cowfish.
