Cows like Shakespeare

Martin Kloess
Maidstone, England - For some reason workers at a British farm, Pleasant Farm, exposed their cows to Shakespeare and said milk production increased by 4 percent.

In particular the cows were exposed to the Changeling Theater Company's rendition of "The Merry Wives of Windsor". This is a comedy. Which could also lead us to believe: cows also enjoy comedy.

According to Rob Forknall, the artistic director, the idea came out of wondering if Shakespeare would have the same relaxing effect as classical music which also seems to increase milk yield.

"Anything that calms the animals and reduces their stress is good and Shakespeare ticks all the right boxes," Liam Batt, a farm worker said. "Perhaps there is something in the language of Shakespeare... we don't know, but it seems to work and milk production has gone up 4 percent."

Even Forknall is surprised at the effect. He said, "Since then we've done several rehearsals with the cows. It saves us having to book rehearsal space and the farmer's very pleased to get more milk."

I wonder if it's Shakespeare specific? Have they tried some Blake? Maybe a bit of Lewis Carroll?
