Coyote Attacks in Animals

Coyote attacks are very common in Arizona, especially with smaller dogs. Coyotes are typically found in a large pack and will hunt together. They will hunt and sleep in these packs. The fact is, there will usually be more than just one coyote around when you see one. Many pet owners will not worry if they see just one coyote on a golf course, and they will continue to let their dog run off of a leash. What happens if the dog takes off after the coyote? What the owner isn't aware of are the four other coyotes hiding in the brush waiting to surprise little fluffy. Very few small dogs survive coyote attacks and the ones that do, are extremely lucky.

Coyotes are usually searching for food when you see them. They can be so stoic as to take your dog from you when he/she is just inches away. The majority of attacks occur so fast that the owner is taken by surprise. Once the coyotes have your dog, it is extremely difficult and dangerous to get them to stop. What coyotes will do a lot of times is that they will actually attempt to call your dog out. If your dog goes running to where they are calling from, he/she can be sure that an entire pack is waiting to attack.Attacks on large dogs are more uncommon than in smaller breed dogs, but they do happen. Often times, coyote attacks need extensive tissue repair and drain placements. However, depending on the severity of the attack, your dog may require 24 hour emergency care. If the wounds are severe enough, the first 24-48 hours are critical and your dog may even die while being treated. To prevent a coyote from attacking your dog, you should always have him/her on a leash when going on a walk. The retractable leashes are worthless, they tend to break and if a coyote wanted little fluffy, it is much easier when the dog is 30 feet away from you on the retractable leash. Carry pepper spray with you to deter any coyote from attacking your dog. Lastly, when your dog is outside in your backyard, you should be out there with him/her. Many attacks occur on the owners own property. Coyotes will jump fences, so do not think that your yard is coyote-proof. This holds especially true for people that do not have fenced-in yards and have open acreage property.
