Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a training program that covers appropriate rescue techniques for individuals assisting someone that may be in cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest is the sudden unexpected loss of heart function, or when a person is not breathing and does not have a pulse.

During CPR training, individuals are taught the signs and symptoms to look for in a person having a heart attack, stroke, or are in cardiac arrest and as well as any choking emergencies. In a CPR course everyone is given critical background about heart disease, risk factors and heart and lung function.

Rescue techniques can be taught for adult, child and infant and the program includes training in skills on how to respond and perform CPR. At the end of a CPR course individuals will be able to know:

when to start CPR

when to give breaths which will also include using barrier devices

when and how to check for a pulse

how to give compressions

when to use an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) if the training calls for it

Programs in the New York Adirondack region, which includes the Saratoga and Glens Falls area, are given by the American Red Cross, which has 2 locations that offer CPR training in both Adult and Child CPR.
