Cradle of Filth Get Ever More Commercial with "Evermore Darkly"

Wes Laurie
I have not kept up with Cradle Of Filth since I was a kid laughing at the screeches that make up their music. When I saw the album "Evermore Darkly" I decided it was time to give them a new listen. "Evermore Darkly" is not the same Cradle Of Filth I visited as a teen and this album felt like it should have somehow been more hardcore. It is silly not scary and down right awful at times, but there is some shine after a few later tracks polish the turd and ultimately "Evermore Darkly" was a fun listen. I found the tunes, though still crazy from the norm of what you hear on radio, to be more accessible and slick in comparison to what my memory recalls of older tunes. Let's get teen girls hooked on this stuff!

"Transmission From Hell": A neat intro speaking of a recording that was made capturing things from Hell and it builds up to where I thought I would get a screech or two in the intro, but alas, the recording must be the forthcoming album itself ala concept.

"Thank Your Lucky Scars": I imagine this is what clowns rock out to as they speed into the ring in their little car. If this is a recording from Hell, then Hell is one corny joke of a place. I'm not sure what they are saying mostly, but it sure sounded like something about a ninja stalking a dream, probably not, I don't care.

"Forgive Me Father (I Have Sinned)":
I think Cradle of Filth have turned into punky skateboarders, maybe with plastic vampire teeth and billowy capes.

"Lilith Immaculate": A zany collage that would actually be quite awesome, if only it were more compact. The story, the duet, the rock insanity did not need to be drug out as long as it is to get out all of the lyrics and maintain the scope of the concept. Pretty cool.

"The Persecution Song": It has it's moments of utter stupidity, but then the screech. Squeals/ screams are top notch, it was after the first brain piercing real Cradle of Filth style screech that the song flopped over on its good side. The ole sounds like an angry grandma vocals were pleasant in their hellish back and forth.

"Forgive Me Father (I'm In A Trance)": Goofy rave music with equally goofy vocals that are hit and miss with a fairly interesting concept. For very moment I hated it there was a little audio tickle that I liked.

"The Spawn Of Love and War": A weak sparring of vocals, throat strained crack, the old lady is ready to croak.

"Summer Dying Fast": It's nothing wonderful, but nothing horrible either. It leaves the album on a positive note of instrumentals. Er, I mean, on a positive note of doom!
