Craft a Cute Frosty Snowman Using Recycled Jeans

Cyndee Kromminga
Create this cute fabric snowman doll to greet guests at your front door or add decor under your Christmas tree after the gifts have been unwrapped. This frosty fellow is made by recycling old jeans. One pair of jeans is enough to make two snowman dolls. When snow begins to fly this year, spend quality time with your children by crafting a whole group of snowmen dolls and give them as gifts to family and friends.

Old jeans
Measuring tape
Scissors
Straight pins
Sewing machine
White felt craft sheet
Hand sewing needle and thread
Stuffing
Twine
Small amount of fleece
Hot glue gun
Craft knife
Sticks
Blush
Orange dimensional fabric paint
Black dimensional fabric paint

1
Cut a 15 inch section from the bottom end of a jean leg. Turn the leg section inside out and lay flat. Pin the cut edges together and sew using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. This seam is the bottom of the snowman body bag. Fold one long side seam over, and line it up with the sewn bottom seam, creating a point. Measure 2 inches from the point and mark with a straight pin. Sew across the mark and cut away the excess triangle of the point. Repeat for the other side, creating a boxed bottom to the snowman body bag.

2
Measure and cut two pieces of white felt 6 inches wide by 12 inches long. Stack the two pieces together, matching the edges and pin. Sew a 1/2 inch seam allowance along both long sides of the stack, creating a tube. Sew a running stitch around the edge of one end on the tube and gather it closed. Knot and clip the thread. Turn the tube right side out and stuff. Sew a running stitch around the tube's open end and gather it closed. Knot and clip the thread. This is the snowman's head.

3
Stuff the snowman body to 4 inches from the open end. Set the head in the top of the bag and continue to stuff around it another 2 inches. Cut an 18 inch length of twine. Tie the twine around the bag, 1 1/2 inches from the top of the bag, cinching just above the stuffing. Knot the twine and tie it into a bow on one side of the bag. This will be the front of the snowman.

4
Cut a 12 inch square from the fleece for a hat. Fold the fleece in half and sew a 1/2 inch seam allowance along the long raw edge. Turn the hat tube right side out. Cut a 10 inch length of twine. Tie the twine in a knot around one end of the tube, 2 inches from the end and trim the ends. This is the top of the hat. Fold the other end up 2 inches for the hat brim cuff. Apply hot glue to the top of the head. Place the hat on the head.

5
Cut a back pocket from the old jeans, cutting around the pocket through the seat of the pants. Apply hot glue to the back of the pocket and center it on the front of the snowman's body. Poke a hole with a craft knife on each side of the body, beside the seam and 1 inch below the twine at the neck of the snowman. Break two sticks 8 inches long from an old branch. Apply hot glue to one end of each branch and stick them in the holes for the snowman's arms.

6
Center and apply 1 inch circles of blush to the cheeks on the snowman's face. Apply a chocolate chip sized dot of orange dimensional fabric paint to the center of the face for the nose. Apply two miniature chocolate chip sized dots of black dimensional fabric paint above the nose for eyes and five dots below the nose in a smile shape. Lay the snowman flat to avoid the paint from dripping. Allow the paint to dry overnight.
